Northern Ontario Summer Studentship Program (SSP)
Please refer to NOSM’s COVID-19 site for all NOSM Summer Studentship updates or contact summerstudentship@nosm.ca for additional information.
NOSM’s Summer Studentship Program (SSP) has been established by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to allow a limited number of regulated health-care students an opportunity to gain relevant work experience in their field of study.
This ministry-funded program provides priority funding to agencies for students who were born and/or raised in one or more of our Northern Ontario communities.
Previously vetted hospitals and clinics in Northern Ontario typically offer summer employment between May and August. Review the current year Agency Employment List below to select your Employer of Choice.
All employment-related matters such as the selection of candidates, the job duties, the rate of pay, and the duration of the employment contract is determined by the employing agency. Successful job applicants can expect more details about the job from the employing agency.
Summer Studentship Experiences
Each year, students share some of the experiences that they have while participating in the NOSM University Summer Studentship Program.
“I think it was important to see how a smaller hospital differs from a larger hospital. I think it’s so important to see how different skills are utilized in smaller communities.” – Medical Student
“Training in the community allows health professionals in training to practice in a real clinical setting and identify passions and interests they may have never known they had. For example, my studentship placement this summer taught me that I have an interest in working in the Emergency Department!” -Nurse
The rural setting gives you a perfect balance of fast pace but not too fast and you see many diverse cases every day.” – Medical Radiation Technologist
“Being able to have more exposure in a rural hospital helped solidify my passion for northern healthcare. We must run differently than larger systems in a city. The NOSM Summer Studentship gave me a glimpse into my future by providing me with valuable experience that I otherwise would not have learned in the classroom. Learning hands on from professionals who actually work in rural hospitals everyday provided me with enough knowledge to know that I wish to come back to Northern Ontario after completing my undergrad to keep working in a setting similar to what I experienced this summer.” – Physiotherapist
