CampMed 2023

Campers who must travel to Sudbury or Thunder Bay to participate in CampMed are required to have a chaperone.

Open to Ontario residents only.

Transportation, accommodation and all other costs are the responsibility of the camper and their chaperone.

NOSM University has several CampMed scholarships available to support families who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of attending CampMed.

These scholarships are in place to help campers and their families mitigate the cost of attending CampMed. These scholarships will not cover the entire cost of attending CampMed.

CampMed has been a successful pathway to medicine at NOSM University:

The deadline to submit an application is May 2, 2023.

Eligibility

CampMed accepts applications from high school students who:

• Live in Northern Ontario or other rural and remote parts of Canada
• Submit a completed application form with all required documentation by the application deadline
• Are currently in Grade 10 or Grade 11*

*High school students currently in Grade 10 or Grade 11 will be given priority in the selection process; however, high school students from other grades may also apply.

Adele Austin
Hey there everyone! My name is Adele. I am thrilled to be joining you at CampMed 2023 and can’t wait to get to know all of you! Although I am originally from Cobourg, I definitely consider Sudbury as my home since attending Laurentian for my bachelor’s in nursing. Currently, I’m finishing up my master of science in nursing (advanced practice nursing stream). Outside of my nursing career and studies, I enjoy spending time outdoors and mentoring children and youth in the child welfare system. Looking forward to sharing some fantastic experiences and memories with you all at CampMed!

Simon Bezanson
My name is Simon, and currently, I attend the Health Sciences program down at Queen’s. Since I became involved in the world of healthcare, my interests and pursuits have been in the spheres of palliative and Indigenous health. As far as hobbies go, I love fishing in all its forms, canoe tripping, rock climbing, wildlife photography, volleyball, and writing poetry. A fun fact about me is I lived three years of my life in Malawi, Africa. Now, I live in Port Arthur with my wonderful family, our crazy calico cat, and Australian shepherd.

Rachael Donnelly
My name is Rachael Donnelly and I am a first-year student at NOSM University, studying on the Sudbury Campus. My previous education was at the University of Waterloo where I did a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies with a Minor in Gerontology, and a Master of Science in Kinesiology. Before attending NOSM University, I worked as a researcher with a focus on improving the health and wellbeing of older adults through nutrition, physical activity, and inclusion in their communities. In my free time, I enjoy swimming, shadow boxing, hiking, and camping.

Daxime Génier
Hi, I am originally from Cochrane, and a Queen’s University graduate student with a degree in biochemistry and a certificate in international studies. I was the recipient of the Robert T. Jones scholarship and spent one year studying abroad at University of St Andrews in Scotland. I was a registered tutor, specializing in physics, chemistry and biochemistry, for the Queen’s Indigenous STEM program. I have applied to NOSM with the goal of becoming a medical doctor, in order to return to his roots in the north. I am an avid badminton, volleyball and chess player.

Emma Harland
Hello! My name is Emma and I am currently a first year medical student at NOSM University. I am from Thunder Bay and recently graduated from Lakehead University with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I worked in a variety of clinical settings including intensive care and outpatient oncology. During this time, I also was involved in teaching literacy in a remote community and providing health promotion workshops to local youth. As for hobbies, I enjoy playing soccer, running, coaching figure/power skating, and walking my dogs Archie and Stella. I’m looking forward to this year’s camp and being able to meet all of the new campers!

Sununu Hemanth Kumar
Hi, I am Sununu Hemanth Kumar, Manager of Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health at West Nipissing General Hospital, Sturgeon Falls. Before this, I worked at Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Center and Parkview Place Long-term Care, Winnipeg. I am from India. I have completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in India. After 6 years of clinical practice, I moved to Canada and completed Healthcare Management Program, Occupational Health and Safety Program, and Infection Control Program and now I am CBIC Board Certified in Infection Control- CIC. I love to continuously learn, teach, and travel. I am very excited to be a part of CampMed and I am looking forward to meeting you all!

Samantha Hull
Hi! Bonjour! My name is Samantha Hull, I have recently completed my undergraduate degree in Biologie Biomédicale at Laurentian University and I am looking forward to joining the class of 2027 at NOSM University in the fall. I grew up in Dowling, Ontario and enjoy camping, skiing, and anything else outdoors. I am greatly passionate about the study of health sciences and can’t wait to share my experiences as a volunteer this summer, as well as meeting all of this year’s campers!

Emily Hunt
My name is Emily and I am a student at NOSM U. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay and attended Lakehead University where I earned my HBSc degree in Applied Life Sciences with a major concentration in biomedical science. I am really passionate about science but also have a love of history. In my spare time I love to hangout with my two little dogs and go fishing. Looking forward to a great week at CampMed!

Theonilda Koiengu
My name is Theonilda but I go by Tt. I graduated from LU Nursing in 2021. I’ve been working as a geriatric RN since. I enjoy hiking and reading. I’ve heard great things from friends who have volunteered with CampMed so I’m excited to explore this amazing opportunity with everyone on the team.

Alexie Lanteigne
Hi everyone! My name is Alexie, and I’ll be one of the volunteers for the Sudbury In-Person CampMed. I’m so excited to meet and spend the week with all of you! I am a registered nurse in rural family medicine and a part-time faculty member in the French nursing program at Laurentian University. In my personal time, you can find me outside with my 3 chocolate labs. Yes, 3! Bring on CampMed, and see you all in July!

Félix Lavigne
Hi everyone! My name is Félix Lavigne, and I am a first-year medical student at NOSM U on the Sudbury campus. I am originally from New Liskeard, ON but have been in Sudbury for the past 5 years. Before starting medical school, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science with a specialization in Biomedical Biology from Laurentian University. I am extremely excited to be back as a CampMed volunteer, but this time as a med student and doing it in-person. July can’t come fast enough, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

Gen Martel
Hi everyone! My name is Genevieve Martel and I am starting my fourth year in the Kinesiology program at Laurentian University! I love the outdoors, playing sports and hanging out with my friends and family! I’m so happy to volunteer with CampMed again this year, we will have so much fun! Can’t wait to meet you all!

Hi, my name is Isabel, and I am a third year student a Laurentian University in the B.Sc. Infirmières (Nursing) program. I am proudly francophone and from a small agricultural town in northern Ontario. I look forward to seeing you all at CampMed this summer.

Nicole Parisien
Hello everyone! My name is Nicole Parisien, and I will be undergoing my fourth year of studies in the HBA Political Science (Pre-Law) program with a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies this upcoming September. I have intersecting passions for medicine, social justice, Indigenous studies, and social accountability. I aspire to attend the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and serve Indigenous communities across Northern Ontario. In my free time, I enjoy volunteering with local and regional organizations and participating in various Lakehead University student associations, including the Pre-Med Society, the Lakehead University Native Student Association, and numerous others. I also enjoy singing and songwriting, playing the piano and guitar, maintaining an active lifestyle, and spending time with my family and friends. I attended CampMed in 2018 and had a fantastic experience; I look forward to volunteering at CampMed this summer and meeting you all!

I started my journey as a student. After graduation, I am now working as a Personal support worker and Developmental Services worker in Bayshore Health Care, Wesway, & Options Northwest. Div Patel
Hi everyone, my name is Div Patel, and I am thrilled to be part of the CampMed team once again this summer. I’m currently a second-year student at NOSM University on the Sudbury Campus. I was born in India, and I’ve been living in Sudbury, ON with my parents for the past fifteen years. Prior to starting at NOSM U, I obtained my Bachelors degree from Laurentian University, specializing in Biomedical Biology, and my Masters degree in Global Health from McMaster University. In my free time, I enjoy working out at the gym, spending quality time with my loved ones, and cycling. Having had an exceptional experience as a virtual volunteer last year, I was excited to reapply for the volunteer position this year! I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and making this a memorable experience for all!!

Claire Poulin
Hello Campers, my name is Claire and I am a first year student at NOSMU! I am a Northern girl at heart, as I was born and raised in Atikokan – a hop, skip, and a jump from Thunder Bay. Prior to starting my medical education at NOSMU I completed my Honors Bachelor of Sciences in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ottawa. I have a passion for science and research and would be happy to talk about my road to medicine while at CampMed.

Paige Primeau
Hi! My name is Paige Primeau. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, and I am entering my fourth year of Life Sciences at McMaster University. After finishing my undergraduate degree,
I plan to pursue a career in medicine, and hopefully practice medicine within Northern Ontario. Growing up as an Indigenous person in Northern Ontario, I have unfortunately witnessed many of the difficulties Indigenous people face when accessing health care
and hope to one day be a part of the solution to minimize health disparities amongst our Indigenous population. In my free time I enjoy going to the gym, making endless Spotify playlists, and spending time outdoors! I am excited to meet you all this summer!

Emily Pynn
My name is Emily Pynn and I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I have just recently graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Life Sciences. I will be attending NOSM U in the fall and hope to pursue a career as a surgeon. When I am not studying, you can find me working out, volunteering, or walking my dog. I look forward to sharing my passion for medicine through CampMed!

Brooklyn Ranta
Hi everyone, my name is Brooklyn (she/her) and I am so thrilled to be a part of CampMed 2023! I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, and completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, in spring 2022. I really love to be involved in the NOSMU community, and I am the Wellness Representative for the first years on the West campus, as well as a social media influencer for NOSM_futuremds, in addition to being in the Indigenous Peoples Health and Wellness Collaborative Specialization. In my free time, you can catch me reading a spooky thriller, doing yoga, or baking a sweet treat! I look forward to meeting you!

Samena Rashid-Mohamed
Hi! My name is Samena and I am a final year student at University of Waterloo. I am currently in my final year of Undergrad completing a Bachelor’s of Science with a minor in Medical Physiology. I have always had a passion for guiding potential pre-meds through their journey. I am currently working at a medical walk-in clinic where I am given the opportunity to shadow physicians, register patients, and conduct myself in a medical environment. During the pandemic, I worked at a Covid-19 Assessment Center as a medical office assistant, where I worked as a dispatcher by registering patient information, providing complementary patient transport for those who needed to be assessed but were unable to attend the assessment center. When I am not working or studying, you can find me curled up with my little Maltipoo watching Chicago Med. I look forward to being a part of the NOSM CampMed 2023 group.

Matthew Redmond
Hello! My name is Matt, and I am from Manitoulin Island. I am finishing up my fourth year of Biomedical Science at the University of Ottawa. I am excited to return as a part of the CampMed team for another year! My research interests involve studying the neural dynamics involved in spinal cord injury and optimizing pediatric concussion treatment. I love playing hockey, going to the gym, and making maple syrup. I am honoured and excited to join the CampMed 2023 team and hope to facilitate a memorable experience!

Sarah Ribey
Hello! My name is Sarah Ribey and I’m entering my fourth year of the Applied Human Nutrition program with an Emphasis in Dietetics at the University of Guelph. I was born and raised in Atikokan, ON and am passionate about outdoor activities as well as exploring everything Northern Ontario has to offer! You can usually find me studying, training with my rowing team, baking, singing, or playing the piano and trumpet. I look forward to meeting you all and sharing my passion for medicine at CampMed!

Kallie Ritchie
Hi everyone! My name is Kallie, and I am in my first year of medical school at NOSM University in Thunder Bay. My hometown is Vermilion Bay, ON and I spend most of my time there while not in school. I graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2022 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science. While I was in high school, I attended a health sciences camp at the University of Toronto which inspired me to pursue medicine. I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you and share my passion for medicine with you! See you soon!

Christina Robert
Hi, My name is Christina Robert. I am a graduate student at Laurentian University where I completed a B.Sc with a specialization in Kinesiology and Minor in Psychology. I am also in the middle of completing a Master’s Degree in Public Health. I have lived in Sudbury for many years and enjoy spending much of my time outdoors. Prior to the end of my University journey, I was a competitive athlete (sprinter) competing across Canada. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Jenna Robert
Hi everyone! My name is Jenna and I am a first-year medical student at NOSM University on the East campus. I was born and raised in Sudbury. I completed my undergraduate degree in Radiation Therapy at Laurentian University in 2020, and worked at Health Sciences North as a radiation therapist for two years prior to medical school. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, taking care of my houseplants, and taking ballet classes! I volunteered for CampMed in 2020, and I am looking forward to volunteering again and meeting everyone!

Sarah Romanko
Hello! My name is Sarah and I will be going into my fourth year of Biomedical Biology at Laurentian University this September. I am also completing a minor in Psychology at the same time. I love spending time outdoors with my dogs and hanging out with my friends and family on my downtime. I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hannah Shortreed
I grew up and live just outside of Thunder Bay, in Kakabeka Falls with my parents. I attended Lakehead University for my undergraduate degree in Applied Life Sciences and played on the women’s volleyball team during my time there. Additionally, I play classical violin and enjoy hiking in my free time!

Rory Smith
My name is Rory and I am a first year biochemistry student at UBC. I am bilingual in French and English. I’m from Thunder Bay and completed the IB diploma program at Superior CVI. I currently work as a lifeguard and swim instructor in BC. I hope to go to medical school to become either a cardiologist or anesthesiologist. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, skiing, camping, rowing, volleyball, or finding new restaurants and cafes. I’m super excited to be a CampMed volunteer and look forward to learning more about healthcare.

Mackenzie Straub
Hello! My name is Mackenzie and I am currently in my first year as a medical student at NOSM University! Prior to joining NOSM U, I completed my degree at Laurentian University in Biomedical Biology. I am originally from Sturgeon Falls, so I greatly enjoy the outdoors, spending time on the lake, travelling and my cat, Willie. Camp Med holds a special place in my heart as I have fortunately been able to participate in every level along the way! I have participated both as a high school student and an undergraduate team lead, so I am beyond excited to be able to participate again as a medical student. In fact, I met many of my classmates now for the first time as students at Camp Med! I hope to one day practice family medicine here in Sudbury with a focus on Maternity Skills and Women’s Health.

Sophie Tremblay
Hi everyone! My name is Sophie Tremblay, I’m currently in my third year of psychology at Laurentian University. I was born in Sudbury but have lived in Timmins, Ottawa and Thunder Bay. I spend most of my spare time cross-country skiing, volunteering with the Métis Nation of Ontario and spending time with my family. I attended this camp when I was in grade 10 and thought it to be a very motivating and positive experience! I love meeting new people and look forward to spending a week learning with everyone.

Maggie Wilberforce
Hi everyone! My name is Maggie Wilberforce (she/her) and I really excited to be part of CampMed this year! I am currently in my second year of the Master of Science in Physical Therapy program at the University of Toronto. Before starting my masters, I attended McMaster University to complete my Honours Bachelor of Science in Integrated Science concentrated in Biology. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, ON and plan to return to Northern Ontario to practice after completing my physiotherapy degree. I also grew up competitively dancing and still love to dance. I am currently volunteering as a dance class assistant with Canada’s National Ballet School’s Adaptive Dance Program. I also really like to get involved in leadership opportunities and am currently one of the Graduate Students’ Union Representatives on the Physical Therapy Student Association at the University of Toronto. Finally, I love to travel, spend time with my dogs, and explore the outdoors in any way I can (hiking, camping, canoeing, etc.).

Kerry Yang
Hello! My name is Kerry and I’m a health sciences student at McMaster University (but a Sudburian at heart). I was a CampMed participant in 2019 which sparked my interest for health sciences! In high school, I also participated in science fairs and worked as a Bluecoat at Science North in the Planetarium and Space Place. Aside from health sciences, I’m passionate about the intersection of research, education, and advocacy. I’m a strong advocate for BIPOC representation in education, and have pioneered the Culture of the North project supported by Future North in Sudbury. I’m so excited to share my diverse passions with this year’s CampMed participants, and hope to impart a love of learning and sense of empowerment from the experience!

CampMed is founded on four pillars of learning. From top left and going clock wise, the icons in the new branding represent interprofessionalism, leadership, culture, and clinical skills—the knowledge and skills that participants gain from attending CampMed.

Interprofessional

Participants attending CampMed learn the importance of interprofessionalism in health-care settings by learning about various health careers and how those professionals work together to ensure the well-being and health of patients. The majority of the interprofessional learning at CampMed is provided by the health-care professionals who participate in the career fair as well as their mentors who are the NOSM’s students and undergraduate student volunteers from Northern Ontario.

Leadership

Throughout the week, the CampMed participants are provided with opportunities to observe the leadership skills of their mentors to build on their own leadership skills set as they are placed in situations that give them a safe setting to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to lead.

Cultural

At CampMed, participants will learn about Francophone and Indigenous health and culture in ways that will broaden their understanding of health needs of Northern Ontario. In simple terms they learn what it means to be a socially accountable health professional. These cultural competencies are woven throughout the week-long curriculum.

Clinical Skills

CampMed offers participants a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning medical and health sciences clinical skills, such as casting, inserting an NG tube, suturing, etc.
