NOSM University Learner Awards of Excellence and Scholarship
Recognizing that teaching and leadership are core competencies for all medical learners and that achieving excellence is a lifelong journey, Faculty Affairs, Learner Support Services, Undergraduate Medical Education, and Postgraduate Medical Education units will collaborate to recognize teaching and leadership excellence among all NOSM University medical learners.

NOSM University Learner Awards of Excellence and Scholarship Information Package 2025-2026
Learner Award Categories
Learner Peer Teaching Award
The Learner Peer Teaching Award recognizes learners at all levels who strive to improve the teaching, learning, and educational environments for other NOSM University learners.
Learner Peer Teaching Award recipients will demonstrate a commitment to being a:
- Expert in their field
- Communicator
- Collaborator
- Manager
- Health Advocate
- Scholar
- Professional
- Positive role model
- Person who provides constructive feedback
- Person who is enthusiastic and provides encouragement
*Note: Nominators and Nominees must be registered NOSM University undergraduate medical students, postgraduate residents, fellows, master’s students, or other allied health learners in good academic standing.
Learner Scholarly Activity Award
The Learner Scholarly Activity Award recognizes learners’ teaching, research, and administrative contributions to NOSM University. Presentation of papers, production of posters, invitations to speak at professional meetings or other institutions, administrative work (including work performed outside the University), and mentorship in the areas mentioned above will be considered.
Scholar attributes include, but are not limited to:
- Respected scholar with excellent communication and teaching skills.
- Excellent teacher, as evidenced by formal evaluations.
- Use of scientific methods and discovery of new knowledge through creative research.
- Engagement in cross-divisional collaboration.
- Successful grant applications.
- Active engagement in research with a strong publishing track record.
- Excellence in and commitment to research.
- Engaged administrator and/or academic leader.
- Demonstrated mentoring of learners.
*Note: Nominators and Nominees must be registered NOSM University undergraduate medical students, postgraduate residents, fellows, master’s students, or other allied health learners in good academic standing.
Learner Advocate/Leader Award
The Learner Advocate/Leader Award recognizes a learner for their achievements in advocacy and/or leadership, particularly for improving education programs and/or the health of a community or population they serve.
This award would recognize learners who have acted as strong advocates in any of the following contexts:
- Participating in or leading a process to improve an education program, process, or tool for the health of a community or population they serve.
- Working with a community or population to identify and address the health determinants affecting them.
- Supporting a cause to improve social determinants of health, health care or education.
- When one pleads on another’s behalf, intercedes as necessary.
- When one speaks, acts, and writes with minimal conflict of interest on behalf of others.
- When one promotes or protects and defends by being on one’s side.Being concerned with someone’s fundamental needs. When one remains loyal and accountable in an empathetic and vigorous way. Promotes learners, patients/clients, and community issues and respects their rights.
1 Advocacy Definition: When one argues for a cause; supports or defends a cause. When one pleads on another’s behalf; intercedes as necessary. When one speaks, acts, and writes with minimal conflict of interest on behalf of others.
*Note: Nominators and Nominees must be registered NOSM University Learners or Dietetic Learners who graduated in the previous year in good academic standing.
Learner-Nominated Teacher Award
The Learner-Nominated Teacher Award recognizes Clinical, Medical, or Human Sciences division members for excellence in academic teaching or clinical teaching/supervision.
The attributes for this award include, but are not limited to, an exemplary demonstration of the following roles:
- Medical Expert
- Communicator
- Collaborator
- Manager
- Health Advocate
- Scholar
- Professional
- Creation of a stimulating learning environment
- Encouragement of self-learning
- Provision of constructive feedback
- Positive role model
*Note:
- This is the only faculty award category where learners can nominate a faculty member.
- Faculty awards nominees must hold a valid faculty appointment in NOSM University’s Clinical, Human, or Medical Sciences Divisions.
- Faculty with the titles of Division Head, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, and Vice President are ineligible to receive an award during their term.
Information Package
Eligibility and Criteria
To be eligible for a NOSM University Learner Award of Excellence and Scholarship, the Nominees must be NOSM University residents, undergraduate medical students, or Master of Medical Studies students.
Nominees should have demonstrated a significant contribution to NOSM University and/or the Northern communities we serve.
Nomination Process
For learner awards, nominations must be submitted by a NOSM University-registered learner.
Nominations must include a completed nomination form and a letter of support (no more than 400 words). If supporting documents are included in the submission, they should accompany the completed nomination form.
Nominators may submit one nomination per person per category using the NOSM University Learner Award of Excellence and Scholarship Nomination Form.
Note: Learners may self-nominate for an award. However, in these cases, the self-nomination must be accompanied by two letters of support from other NOSM U learners.
The nominator is responsible for ensuring that all information required on the nomination form is complete.
The NOSM University Learner Awards of Excellence and Scholarship Committee—Learner Awards Subcommittee will review nominations and make final selections.
All nominees will receive written notification and congratulations regarding their nomination. Once all applications have been reviewed, recipients in each category will be notified and congratulated in writing.
