Clinical Faculty Re-ranking

To be considered for re-ranking to Assistant Professor, Clinical, faculty members must:

• demonstrate a commitment to NOSM University;
• contribute to NOSM University beyond clinical teaching;
• commit at least five per cent* of their time to research, scholarly activity, and/or administrative work;
• maintain more than 50 per cent of their clinical practice at a NOSM University-affiliated site;
• remain in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) or their applicable health professional regulatory body;
• retain hospital privileges throughout their term as Lecturer – Clinical (if applicable);
• have no significant concerns documented in faculty evaluations; and
• complete the Clinician Teacher Certificate (CTC) if appointed to faculty after July 2025.

*Five per cent is equivalent to approximately two hours per week.

Re-ranking to Assistant Professor, Clinical is granted at the discretion of the Section Chair.

Faculty members who do not request a meeting with their Section Chair will continue at the Lecturer – Clinical rank.

NOSM University Continuing Professional Development (CPD) offers the Clinician Teacher Certificate (CTC), a two-year, self-paced program designed to help faculty strengthen their clinical teaching skills and explore effective teaching strategies.

Completion of the Clinician Teacher Certificate will be required for all faculty members appointed after July 2025 seeking re-ranking from Lecturer – Clinical to Assistant Professor – Clinical.

Certificate Requirements

To earn the Clinician Teacher Certificate, faculty members must complete:

• five one-hour asynchronous e-learning courses; and
• two two-hour workshops.

Registration Information

Thanks to educational grant funding from NOAMA, all NOSM University faculty members have complimentary access to faculty development courses through the CPD Learning Hub.

Participation in the Clinician Teacher Certificate program helps faculty enhance their teaching skills and demonstrates a commitment to professional development. Completion of the CTC is a requirement for the re-ranking of clinical faculty appointed after July 2025 and is also viewed favourably by the Joint and Stipendiary Promotions Committee.
