Research for a healthier North

Welcome to the Research and Graduate Studies Office at NOSM University. Research at NOSM U is reflective of our mandate to be socially accountable to the diverse cultures of Northern Ontario, tackling important questions related to improving the health of the people of Northern Ontario. Research by our faculty and learners covers a breadth of topics in clinical, community and population health, biomedical sciences, environmental health, health education and health services.

At NOSM University, research is recognized as a critical component of the distributed medical education program. Beginning in year one, our medical learners are encouraged to engage in research opportunities through summer studentships and continuing opportunities are available throughout their undergraduate and post-graduate studies. As well, opportunities for research and professional development extend to health-care professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, residents and community partners.

The research initiatives developed in partnership with NOSM University are internationally recognized and supported by competitive, peer-reviewed funding awarded on the basis of scientific excellence. NOSM University has two biomedical research labs, one at each of the campuses: Laurentian University in Sudbury, and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. In addition, NOSM University is affiliated with universities, private sector organizations, and health centres across the North to facilitate research initiatives.

Each year, since 2006, NOSM University has been hosting the Northern Health Research Conference (NHRC), a conference which highlights the breadth of research of the North and beyond. It provides an opportunity to highlight projects underway by students, residents, community-based researchers, and our dedicated research staff, and allows for collaboration and community networking. As outlined by our strategic plan, NOSM University’s key commitment to research remains strong. As we move forward as a school, it is our mandate to grow quality research programs for and by the north.
