Effective July 1, 2025, all publicly assisted universities in Ontario are required to reserve no less than 95% of their annual admissions to medical health education programs for Ontario residents. The new regulations defines “medical health education program” and “ordinarily resident in Ontario” as follows:
- Medical Health education program: An undergraduate program of postsecondary study that leads to a Doctor of Medicine, Medicinae Doctor or an equivalent basic degree in medicine (but not in combination of such a degree with a Doctor of Philosophy) and where the enrolment of students in the program is funded, at least partially, by the government of Ontario.
- MMTP positions are funded by the Department of National Defense and are exempt. MD/PhD & MD/Master’s Combined Program seats are also exempt as per above description.
- Ordinarily resident in Ontario: A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) who fulfills the following criteria:
- They or their spouse have lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months after the age of 14 and either:
- received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or
- have not subsequently lived for 12 or more consecutive months in any other Canadian province or territory since completing the most recent 12 month period of residency in Ontario.
- In determining whether an individual or their spouse has resided in Ontario or in another province or territory of Canada for 12 consecutive months for the purposes of point A, the time that the individual or spouse spent in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution shall not be included unless,
- the individual or spouse was in a full-time, in-person degree program in Ontario; and
- the degree program is one that is ordinarily completed in four or more academic years
Applicants will be required to indicate whether they are an Ontario resident based on this definition in their OMSAS application.
I attended CEGEP and then finished a degree at a university in Quebec. Am I eligible to apply?
I completed some courses online – will they be included in the GPA calculation?
Does NOSM University’s UME Program accept transfer or international students?
Due to the integrated nature of the curriculum, NOSM University’s UME Program cannot accept transfer students. If you are accepted to the medical school, you must complete the full four (4) years of the medical program.
NOSM University’s UME Program does not accept international students. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) to be eligible to apply.
My university degree program is a ‘transfer’ or collaborative program that combines community college credits with university degree credits. Will my college course credits be used in the calculation of my GPA for admission to the UME Program?
No, college credits will not be used. NOSM University’s UME Program requires the minimum completion of a four (4) year recognized university undergraduate degree. Only university degree-level course credits are used in the calculation of the GPA. NOSM University recognizes the programming partnership and collaboration that exists between many universities and community colleges.
Applicants whose four (4) year degree is completed through a transfer of credits from a college are required to have completed a minimum of ten (10) full course credits, twenty (20) half course credits or, a combination of at the university degree level at the time you apply.
Is my professional degree considered a graduate or undergraduate degree?
Can I apply with a degree from outside of Canada?
At this time the Ontario Medical Schools (including NOSM U) who accept international education in their process require a World Education Services (www.wes.org) assessment to accompany their transcripts. No other credentialling options are accepted. There are no exceptions.
