Black Admission Stream

Applicants applying through the Black Admission Stream must meet the admission and application requirements outlined on the Application Information & Admission Requirements page and submit all required application documentation for their application to be considered. 

The Black Admission Stream is for Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents who identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black North American, or multi-racial applicants who have and identify with their Black ancestry.  

Black applicants may either: 

1. Self-identify and apply to the General Admission Streamor
2. Apply to the Black Admission Stream (BAS) and submit all required documentation. 

Stream applicants that meet the minimum requirements will be reviewed by the Black Admissions Subcommittee 

Required Documents

Personal Essay (max 500 words)

Submit an essay describing your ethno-racial background and how your experiences, accomplishments, and perspectives as a Black or Black Multiracial person have motivated you to apply through the Black Admission Stream. Highlight how your Black identity has shaped your lived experiences, goals, and aspirations. 

Recommendation Form

Applicants must have one referee complete the Black Recommendation Form (BRF), available in the Referees section of the OMSAS application. Choose someone with extensive personal knowledge of your connection the black community.  

This form can be completed by a: Black community organizer, Black-led organization member or executive/board member, faith leader, language schoolteacher, Black-led/organized sports team. 

A close family members should not be chosen to complete this form. 

The referee must provide the following information in the BRF:  

  • Their relationship to you, in what capacity they know you, and how long 
  • Their own role in the Black community? 
  • The activity or activities that support your connection and involvement with the Black community (nature of the activity, the frequency or duration of said activity/activities) 

Submission

The personal essay must be submitted to OMSAS via Secure Application Messaging (SAM) by the application deadline.  

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that OMSAS receives their BRF by the application deadline; applicants are advised to confirm submission with their referee before the application deadline. 

Applicants who do not meet the requirements or submit incomplete BAS documentation will default to the General Admission Stream.
