Black Admission Stream

Applicants applying through the Black Admission Stream must meet the admission and application requirements outlined on the Application Information & Admission Requirements page and submit all required application documentation for their application to be considered.

The Black Admission Stream is an optional application stream for Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents who self-identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black North American, or multi-racial applicants who have and identify with their Black ancestry:

1. Self-identify as Black and apply to the General Admission Stream only or
2. Apply to the Black Admission Stream.

The Black Admissions Subcommittee will review the stream-required documents for all applicants who apply through the Black Admission Stream and receive an invitation to interview.

The admission interview and selection process will include representation from the Black community.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements or do not submit all required documentation to support their application to the Black Admission Stream will be considered through the General Admission Stream.

Applicants who want to self-identify but do not apply to the Black Admission Stream are not required to submit any documentation and will not be considered for admission through the Black Admission Stream.

 

Black Admission Stream Requirements


The Black Admission Stream is an optional application stream for Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents who self-identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black North American, or multi-racial applicants who have and identify with their Black ancestry.

To apply through the Black Admission Stream applicants must submit the following documentation:

Black Admission Stream Essay

In a 250-500-word personal statement, please describe your ethno-racial background and how your perspectives, accomplishments, and unique experiences as a Black person, or a Black Multiracial person who identifies with their Black identity, have motivated you to apply through the Black Admission Stream. We strongly encourage you to highlight how these aspects of your Black identity have influenced your lived experiences and how they may have shaped your goals and aspirations.

Recommendation Form

Applicants must provide a recommendation letter that attests to their connection to their Black community. This letter can be provided by: Black community organizer, Black-led organization member or executive/board member, faith leader, language school teacher, Black-led/organized sports team.

The letter’s author should know about the applicant’s connection and contribution to the Black community. Applicants should choose someone who knows them well and can speak to this connection. The letter should not be from a family member.

In the letter, the author must include their:

  • full name
  • title
  • address
  • telephone number and
  • email address.

AND

the author must answer the following questions:

  • What is your relationship to the applicant?
  • What is your own role in the Black community?
  • In what capacity do you know the applicant?
  • How many years have you known the applicant?
  • Describe the activity or activities that support the applicant’s connection and involvement with the Black community. Please include details such as the nature of the activity, the frequency (daily, weekly, etc.), as well as the duration of said activity/activities

NOTE: We will accept only one (1) letter of recommendation.

Applicants wishing to apply to the Black Admission Stream must submit the required essay to OMSAS via Secure Applicant Messaging (SAM) by the application deadline.
