Welcome to the Family Medicine Program!
Please visit the Prospective Resident section for more information on how to apply and information sessions.
Since its inception, NOSM University’s Family Medicine Program has been providing learners with unique experiences that prepare them for medical practice anywhere in Canada, including the confidence and expertise to practice in some of the more rural and remote regions of northern Ontario.
What Sets Us Apart
The distributed nature of our program truly sets us apart. Our campus is the largest in Ontario, with teaching sites distributed throughout northern Ontario, each offering unique characteristics and high-quality, full-scope, hands-on training. What makes our approach particularly distinctive is that all FM residents spend two months each year in rural communities, providing genuine exposure to rural family medicine practice. This feature is often identified by our residents as one of the best aspects of our program – it’s not just about learning clinical skills, but understanding the unique healthcare opportunities of rural communities while experiencing the richness of their people.
Comprehensive Training Experience
Supported by evidence-based clinician teachers with diverse backgrounds and interests – many of whom are graduates of the residency program itself – learners develop the skills to care for patients longitudinally in a variety of settings. Dedicated opportunities in family medicine are at the core of the curriculum. Most training sites use a block-based approach, with a minimum of eight months out of two years spent in their home family medicine clinic and opportunities to return to their home clinic on a regular basis during their off service rotations.
The NOSM U FM Advantage
Family Medicine offers something increasingly rare in medicine – the opportunity to build meaningful, long-term relationships with patients and families while practicing the full breadth of medicine. Our residents deliver babies, manage complex chronic diseases, provide acute care in hospital settings, perform minor procedures, and provide preventative care, truly becoming the quarterback of their patients’ healthcare. In northern Ontario especially, you become an essential part of the healthcare fabric, experiencing this first-hand throughout your training.
The people of our communities are welcoming and eager to see residents taking an interest in the North and participating in healthcare provision. Family medicine residents quickly feel at home and have opportunities to explore all that our region offers, from outdoor recreational activities that take advantage of our four seasons to picturesque scenery. There truly is something for everyone!
