Theme 1 Course: Northern and Rural Health

Theme 1 covers the teaching of health care and service issues in Northern Ontario, and the challenges, benefits and rewards of practicing medicine in Northern Ontario. It also focuses on health care priorities for Indigenous people as well as Francophone people in Northern Ontario, and the impact of history and geography of Northern Ontario on health, health care and the foundation of culturally safe care and interprofessionalism.

Theme 1 is looking for a faculty member with expertise in the area of Northern and Rural Health with emphasis on critical reflection and mental health. Understanding of some of the health care needs of Indigenous people and Francophone people in Northern Ontario is desirable.

Reporting

The Theme 1 Committee Member (Rural Generalist) reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME).

Responsibilities

  • Between Theme Committee meetings:
    • Write/review theme objectives;
    • Write/review/grade theme assessment questions or assignments; and
    • Review module cases and clinical scenarios for rural theme content representative of practice in Northern Ontario.
  • Act as the Chair designate on different committees as assigned by the Theme Chair

Qualifications

Education

  • Doctor of Medicine degree
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
  • Must have (or be eligible for) a faculty appointment with NOSM University

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interest in medical education in the area of Northern and Rural Health
  • Must have an interest in enhancing rural generalism in the curriculum
  • Interest in medical education focused on rural generalism practice
  • Specially interest education beyond the deficit perspective that can pervade the rural health education
  • Preference will be given to faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Two (2.0) days per month
