President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean & CEO

NOSM University

Innovative education and research for a healthier North.

On April 1, 2022, NOSM University made history by becoming Canada’s first independent medical university and continues to push the boundaries of health professions education, grounded in the core values of innovation, social accountability, collaboration, inclusiveness, and respect.

NOSM University is one of the greatest health human resource success stories of Canada. Born of a grassroots movement, NOSM University is a made-in-the-North solution to regional healthcare inequalities. Its internationally recognized distributed, community-engaged learning (DCEL) model is distinctive and has grown into something extraordinary. NOSM University faculty, staff, and students do not function in a traditional urban University context. Rather, the campuses of the University are the boundaries of Northern Ontario, spanning thousands of kilometres, with two main urban sites and countless rural, remote, and smaller communities that partner with the University to provide a distributed model of learning.

This trailblazing institution is seeking its next President, Vice Chancellor, Dean & CEO to help write NOSM University’s next inspiring chapter.

As NOSM University’s next President, Vice Chancellor, Dean and CEO, you’re a proven academic administrative leader with creativity and executive presence. You’re inspired by, are prepared to operationalize, and are seeking to champion NOSM U’s mission, vision, values, and unique strategic direction, growing the mission from a small medical school to a health education and research institution that is a first-of-its-kind university in Canada. You’re an enabler, connecter, and mentor who unlocks the potential of your leaders, teams, and institution. You have the vision and operational skills to grow and launch new interprofessional and interdisciplinary academic programming and to lead it to become an independent research University. You are highly visible both on campus and across the 90 communities in Northern Ontario, working to understand and address the priorities, challenges, and needs of NOSM U’s learners, faculty, and staff. Beyond being a Dean of a medical school, and CEO of a not-for-profit corporation, as President of a new university, you have a vision for what a new emerging medical University will be in Canada. An engaging and compelling leader, you demonstrate the uncanny ability to connect with and move partners, collaborators, and decision-makers in community, government, health care, and industry. You have exceptional communication skills and presence, acting as an ambassador for NOSM University and embodying the ideals of ethical leadership and social accountability to media, government, and community. You are well-versed in the contemporary financial and operational challenges facing post-secondary education in Canada, Ontario, and in particular, the North, with a clear track record of shepherding stability and sustainability from a position of leadership. You’re a balanced leader with strategic foresight and operational acuity, able to navigate disruption and unpredictability with a steady hand. While addressing immediate challenges, your attention remains forward-looking, ensuring NOSM University is positioned to continue achieving academic excellence and a transformative research presence. You are a beacon for equity, anti-racism, and social accountability, leading with courage, authenticity, and a holistic mindset. You have engaged with and have an advanced understanding of the social and health challenges facing Indigenous, Francophone, rural, northern, and/or remote communities.

If you are the leader that NOSM University needs to continue its evolving legacy in the North, we’d love to hear from you. Please submit your application and related materials online at https://boyden.thriveapp.ly/job/2338. For additional information, please contact Michael Naufal (mnaufal@boyden.com) and Mike Young (myoung@boyden.com).

We thank all applicants for their interest, however only those under consideration for the role will be contacted. Although being an MD is an asset, it is not required.  NOSM University is committed to building diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible working environments and welcomes those who would contribute to the further diversification of staff including, but not limited to, women, racialized persons, Indigenous peoples, francophones, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation to apply.
