Reporting
The Lead Coordinator, Family Medicine-Emergency Medicine (FM-EM) Simulations, reports to the Program Director, FM-EM.
Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
The Lead Coordinator, FM-EM Simulations, is responsible for the overall planning and continuous quality improvement (CQI) of the FM-EM Simulation Program. This includes oversight of FM-EM Simulation sessions at the home base site at which they are located (aligned to the site-specific expectations of the Simulation Coordinator (Assistant) role).
Key Lead Responsibilities
- Liaises with program leadership (PD, SD, CC, etc.) as necessary to incorporate program goals and program personnel into simulation programming.
- Reviews the annual curriculum for the FM-EM Simulation Program, ensuring that the curriculum is aligned with the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s Priority Topics in Emergency Medicine, and develops new simulations cases or sessions in accordance with the learning needs and priority topics
- Develops and reviews the objectives and learning points for each session, including unified rounds and orientation, and sends these to faculty facilitators
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates the logistics of the sessions
- Develops and delivers simulation skills sessions, and allied health sessions as necessary
- Develops and reviews Faculty Tips & Tricks for Teaching Procedural Skills and Debriefing for Simulations Scenarios.
- Develops overall goals, objectives & themes for the Longitudinal Faculty Development: Debriefing for Simulation Scenarios for the FM-EM Simulation Program
- Continuous Quality Improvement: reviews and evaluates feedback from faculty, residents, and staff, and implements changes to all simulations sessions as required
- Serves as a resource for the Simulation Coordinator (Assistant) at the other home base site, other faculty, Simulation Technologists, and others as needed
- Assists in enhanced learning plans or remediation of a resident that require simulation as required
- Assists with simulation based case and rubric development
- Attends FM-EM Residency Program Committee (RPC) meetings
Key Responsibilities – Site Specific (Same as Assistant)
- Be present at the home base site for all FM-EM Simulation sessions to provide on-site set up and event support, trouble shooting, and ensure sessions run smoothly and residents’ learning needs are met
- Recruit appropriate faculty for the sessions that take place at the home base site
- Train faculty for these sessions when needed (e.g., specifically training in debriefing and other skills as needed)
- Send a letter one month in advance to the residents who attend sessions at the home base site outlining any pertinent details as well as the preparations that the residents need to complete prior to the session (readings, watching videos, etc.)
- Send a letter to each faculty prior to each session outlining the objectives, their role, the readings, and videos, etc. with which they need to be familiar with to help facilitate the session
- Prepare the Delivery Guide and Equipment Request for the sessions taking place at the home base site for each session
- Write cases for the Simulation scenarios and rehearse the cases
- Send personalized thank-you letters to faculty after each session
- Test equipment regularly and when needed
- Liaise as needed with the home base Simulation Technologists & NOSM U PGME staff well in advance of each Simulation session
- Write up a list of tasks for PGME administrative support staff
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine degree
- Current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
- CCFP (EM) certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Faculty appointment with NOSM U
- Minimum of one (1) year recent regional practice experience
- Minimum of one (1) year recent experience as a preceptor
- Experience with Educational Modality & Debriefing for Simulation is preferred. Completion of the Royal College Simulation Educator Training (SET) course is an asset
- Self-motivated and directed
- Superior interpersonal, communication, management, and problem-solving skills
- Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing at a NOSM University affiliated site
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process (unless otherwise already compensated by the home base hospital and/or Local Education Group (LEG) related to EM faculty)
Time Commitment
- One and a quarter (1.25) days per month
