Sault Ste. Marie Site Director: Dr. Tara Oliver

Sault Ste. Marie offers Family Medicine placements within the largest Multidisciplinary Medical Group in Ontario, as well as placements in various Family Health Teams. The newly built Clinical Learning Centre at the Group Health Centre is a comfortable environment to share learning with other residents and students. Sault Ste. Marie hosts 8 NOSM University clinical clerks for 8 months of the year and many elective learners, therefore there is ample opportunity for FM residents to teach junior learners and consolidate their learning.

The Sault Area Hospital is a new hospital that opened in 2012. We have specialty services in all areas with the exception of Cardiac Surgery and Neurosurgery. In 2015, we started offering angioplasty services at our hospital. In an effort to promote learning and student wellness, rotations are learner-centred and not service-based in Sault Ste. Marie.

The schedule is evolving towards a competency-based model with 2 half days back with your primary preceptor per 4-week off-service block to promote longitudinal learning. Among program highlights, our surgery block is designed to be half general surgery, tailored to FM needs, and half elective surgical experiences of the resident’s choice. A popular elective option includes time with palliative care at the Algoma Resident Community Hospice (ARCH) in the community. Additionally, there are few specialty residents and therefore FM residents have ample opportunity to be first call during off-service rotations and get great exposure and learning in clinics, procedures, and surgeries.
