NOSM University invites applications for a dynamic and community-minded Research Associate to coordinate and manage an international research partnership grant focused on health equity in Northern Ontario, with an emphasis on communications and digital technologies. The successful candidate will support international and regional collaborations among researchers, policymakers, healthcare providers, and Indigenous and rural communities. This position is ideal for someone with strong project management skills, a passion for equity-driven research, and experience or knowledge of Northern Ontario’s unique social, geographic, and healthcare contexts.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Project Coordination & Grant Management

  • Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day implementation of the international partnership grant, ensuring project deliverables and timelines are met.
  • Foster and manage collaborative relationships across diverse partners, including universities, Indigenous organizations, healthcare institutions, and international stakeholders.
  • Support compliance with ethical, financial, and reporting requirements from both funding agencies and institutional policies.

Health Equity & Northern Engagement

  • Ensure the research activities are guided by principles of health equity, community-based research, and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating consultations, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events with Northern and Indigenous communities.
  • Support local capacity-building efforts and ensure community voices are integrated meaningfully throughout the project lifecycle.

Research & Knowledge Mobilization

  • Contribute to research on socially accountable research for addressing health disparities.
  • Assist in writing academic publications, policy briefs, and community reports that reflect the priorities of Northern and Indigenous partners.
  • Lead the development of knowledge translation materials, including digital storytelling, multimedia, and social media communications.

Technology & Communication Strategy

  • Support the development and implementation of communications tools and technologies that improve research access and engagement across geographies.
  • Coordinate digital platforms that enhance international and regional research collaboration, such as project websites, online repositories, and video conferencing systems.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Public Health, Indigenous Studies, Communication Studies, Information Technology, or a related discipline (PhD considered an asset) or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience coordinating research or community-based projects, ideally involving rural, remote, or Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of health equity principles and the social determinants of health in Northern or underserved contexts.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural communication and relationship-building.
  • Familiarity with communications or health technologies (e.g., telehealth, community radio, digital platforms).
  • Lived experience or prior work in Northern Ontario or with Indigenous communities.
  • Understanding of OCAP® principles and ethical research practices involving Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience with virtual collaboration tools and knowledge management systems.

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
