Reporting

The Pediatrics Research Coordinator reports to the Program Director, Pediatrics.

Responsibilities

Educational Responsibilities

  • Develops an in depth understanding of the requirements for research as it relates to accreditation of the program by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the program’s goals and objectives.
  • Oversees the research skills curriculum for residents including the development, maintenance and implementation of research objectives
  • Supports the research projects of residents in the residency program
  • Acts as a resource for reviewing and improving the process of resident research
  • Participates in planning faculty development, as it relates to research
  • Contributes to the ongoing development of relevant clinical research by faculty members
  • In collaboration with the PGME Research Lead provides information to residents on available funding for research
  • Travels as needed to promote resident research across Northern Ontario
  • Organizes research days for residents to present their projects
  • Provides information to residents about available research awards
  • Facilitates submission of resident research for publication and/or presentation at external conferences
  • Assists with development and facilitation of journal club for residents 2-3 times per year
  • Works with research tutor to oversee methodology and statistical analysis of all resident research projects
  • Provides annual presentation on introduction to research milestones and curriculum to PGY-1 residents during orientation week
  • Co-leads and facilitates continuous quality improvement initiatives for the residency program in conjunction with the program director and academic coordinator

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Works with the Program Director and the Residency Program Committee (RPC) to make recommendations for overall research policy
  • Collaborates with the Postgraduate Research Lead and the Vice Dean, Research, Innovation & International Relations, NOSM U, to foster collaborative research across residency programs
  • Mandatory attendance at Residency Program Committee (RPC) meetings
  • Member of the Postgraduate Research Committee meetings

Qualifications

Education

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario with certification OR an individual with educational and professional experience in research methodology

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U
  • Recent northern practice experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a preceptor
  • Knowledge of clinical medical research, policies and procedures as they apply to postgraduate medical education
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills
  • Preference will be given to faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Two (2.0) days per month
