Become a Registered Dietitian
A career in dietetics offers an incredibly rewarding opportunity to positively impact people’s lives. As a Registered Dietitian (RD), you will play a vital role in guiding individuals toward healthier lifestyles, helping them make informed decisions about their nutrition and overall well-being. Your expertise can help empower people to adopt healthy habits and prevent or manage conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and gastrointestinal disorders.
By becoming a RD, you will support individuals’ food and nutrition goals and contribute to the broader health challenges of your community. Whether working in hospitals, public health units, community health centers, or long-term care homes, you will have the chance to tailor your advice to the unique needs of each person you work with, fostering a healthier society one person at a time.
NOSM University offers the Dietetic Practicum Program for those interested in pursuing the RD credential. DPP graduates are eligible to take the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination to become RDs and may become active members of a provincial regulatory college.
To become a Registered Dietitian in Canada requires the following steps:
- Graduation from an EQUAL accredited Canadian undergraduate program in food and nutrition or equivalent.
- Successful completion of an EQUAL accredited program of supervised practical experience (post-degree Dietetic Practicum, Integrated Undergraduate program, or combined Masters/Practicum).
- Successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE) and registration with a provincial regulatory college (e.g. College of Dietitians of Ontario).
