Reporting
The Medical Career Committee (MCC) Member reports directly to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). Collegial and collaborative supervision, leadership and guidance, including delegation of tasks and contribution to performance review, will be by the Theme 6 Committee Chair – Medical Career.
Responsibilities
- Attend MCC meetings (planned monthly or as determined by the Chair)
- Assist the MCC in:
- its responsibility for all aspects of the Medical Career Curriculum including outcomes, objectives, assessment, delivery methods, and program evaluation in all four years of the UME program addressing the relevant aspects of professional identity formation and career development, concepts of wellness and financial and practice management
- review of student assessment program evaluation data and other data with regard to career progression of UME students and use it to implement appropriate changes/revisions to the curriculum
- ensuring that the UME curriculum provides effective career advising that is responsive to the needs of individual students
- ensuring that processes are in place that allow students to access appropriate mentors, such as family and specialist physicians, for one-on-one and group-based career advising
- ensuring processes are in place that allow equitable access to Special Educational Experiences in Phase 1
- putting into place appropriate alternative career pathways and exits from the UME program
- ensuring that the UME program meets all CACMS accreditation and other appropriate external standards related to career advising
- ensuring students receive a broad exposure to a medical career curriculum
- anticipating student needs at each stage of their medical education and is informed by career development theory
- supporting students who are at various stages of determining their future career goals
- providing students with career tools and resources which are introduced to students so that they can simultaneously begin to explore the specialty options available within a field of medicine, and work towards creating a career plan
- Work with MCC Members to integrate MCC content across the curriculum
- Participate in periodic additional meetings as necessary on topics relevant to the goals of the MCC
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine degree
- Possession of a current license to practice medicine as a medical or surgical specialist in the province of Ontario
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have (or be eligible for) a clinical faculty appointment with NOSM University
- A demonstrated interest or expertise in Career Advising, Wellness and/or Financial and Practice Management systems
- Preference will be given to candidates residing in Northern Ontario
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- One (1.0) day per month
