Althaf Lathif
Wâciye (hello), my name is Althaf, and I am a first-year Physician Assistant student at the University of Toronto. Over the past three years, I have lived, worked, and volunteered in several remote First Nations communities along the James Bay coast, from Moosonee and Moose Factory to Peawanuck, where I have been fortunate to build meaningful relationships and feel a strong sense of connection to the North. Throughout this time, I have taken on a range of roles, including Diabetes Prevention Coordinator, Supply Teacher, Volunteer Firefighter, Canadian Armed Forces Ranger, Paramedic Assistant, and Regional Manager at the local hospital. In many of these roles, I worked closely with Indigenous youth, mentoring and supporting them in their academic journeys and future career aspirations.

These experiences have also given me the privilege of working closely with community Elders and learning from Indigenous perspectives, strengthening my understanding of the cultural nuances within First Nations communities, including both their strengths and the challenges they face. I have seen firsthand the impacts of food insecurity and the gaps in continuity of care across remote regions, which have fuelled my passion for improving access to healthcare in underserved Northern communities and advocating for more students and clinicians to consider meaningful careers in the North.

I’m really looking forward to being part of CampMed, sharing my experiences, and inspiring the next generation of medical learners to explore opportunities in the beautiful “True North,” as well as connecting with all of you this summer. Outside of school, volunteering, and work, I enjoy staying active through competitive squash, soccer, and volleyball, skateboarding, aquascaping, and spending time outdoors through photography, one-wheeling, and the occasional adventure exploring different types of mushrooms and trees.

Four Pillars of CampMed

CampMed is founded on four pillars of learning: interprofessionalism, leadership, culture, and clinical skills –  the knowledge and skills that participants gain from attending CampMed.

Interprofessional

Participants attending CampMed learn the importance of interprofessionalism in health-care settings by learning about various health careers and how those professionals work together to ensure the well-being and health of patients. The majority of the interprofessional learning at CampMed is provided by the health-care professionals who participate in the career fair as well as their mentors who are the NOSM’s students and undergraduate student volunteers from Northern Ontario.

Leadership

Throughout the week, the CampMed participants are provided with opportunities to observe the leadership skills of their mentors to build on their own leadership skills set as they are placed in situations that give them a safe setting to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to lead.

Cultural

At CampMed, participants will learn about Francophone and Indigenous health and culture in ways that will broaden their understanding of health needs of Northern Ontario. In simple terms they learn what it means to be a socially accountable health professional. These cultural competencies are woven throughout the week-long curriculum.

Clinical Skills

CampMed offers participants a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning medical and health sciences clinical skills, such as casting, inserting an NG tube, suturing, etc.
