Sudbury Stream

Sudbury Site Director: Dr. Megan Messenger
Assistant Site Director: Dr. Shane Szalai

Sudbury offers an exceptional training environment that blends clinical excellence, diverse learning opportunities, and a warm, welcoming community. As a hub for medical education in Northern Ontario, our site provides residents with a rich and well-rounded experience—both professionally and personally.

Diverse and Personalized Clinical Training

Sudbury features a wide range of family practice models, allowing residents to explore and shape their future practice styles. From comprehensive family medicine to focused practices in areas such as:

    • Women’s Health
    • Palliative Care
    • Addictions Medicine
    • Geriatrics
    • Sexual Health
    • Hospitalist Medicine
    • Academic and Medical Education

Residents are matched with preceptors based on their learning preferences. Many residents train in group practices with multiple preceptors, providing exposure to varied practice styles and patient populations. One-on-one teaching remains a core strength, ensuring high patient volumes and personalized mentorship.

Preceptors in Sudbury teach because they’re passionate about medical education. This creates a supportive and enthusiastic learning environment. Informal teaching often extends beyond the clinic—whether on a hike near the hospital or relaxing by one of the city’s many lakes.

Interprofessional and Collaborative Learning

Sudbury is home to several other NOSM U residency programs, including General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Public Health, and Pediatrics. This fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and enhances the training experience.

Other health professional learners – such as dietetic interns, physician assistants, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists – train in Sudbury, further enriching team-based care and collaborative learning.

Academic and Hospital Facilities

Health Sciences North (HSN), our main teaching hospital, is a modern, 454-bed tertiary care center serving over 600,000 people across Northeastern Ontario. HSN offers comprehensive services, including:

    • Critical care and emergency medicine
    • Family and child health
    • Mental health and addictions
    • Cancer care (Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre)
    • Surgery
    • Diagnostic imaging
    • Rehabilitation

The Labelle Innovation and Learning Centre, opened in 2021, features cutting-edge simulation labs, debriefing rooms, classrooms, and resident spaces including sleep rooms and study areas.

Additional clinical training opportunities exist at community-focused sites such as the Sudbury District Health Unit, Indigenous and Francophone Health Centres, mental health facilities, long-term care homes, nurse practitioner clinics, and more.

Life in Sudbury: A Natural and Cultural Gem

Sudbury is a vibrant northern city with the amenities of an urban center and the natural beauty of the Canadian Shield. With over 300 lakes within city limits, residents can swim, kayak, paddleboard, or relax by the water—often within minutes of the hospital.

Sudbury also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene with live music, independent restaurants and breweries, theatre, and even film sets looking for extras.

A Place to Learn, Live, and Stay

Sudbury isn’t just a training site—it’s a community that draws people in and encourages them to stay. Our family medicine program is educationally driven, not service-based, and we prioritize strong mentorship, work-life balance, and community engagement.

Many of our graduates choose to stay and practice in Sudbury after residency, a testament to the positive experiences and deep connections they build here.

Come see for yourself what life and learning in Sudbury is all about. A visit might bring you here—but it’s the people, the training, and the lifestyle that will make you want to stay.
