The position profile below calls for the successful candidate to have a substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by distributed medical education, to possess significant experience in research in the health care and academic sectors, to be self-motivated and self-directed, and to possess superior interpersonal, facilitation, communication, management and problem-solving skills.
Reporting
The North Bay Family Medicine Research Tutor reports to the Clinical Curriculum and Academic Lead, Family Medicine.
Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
- The Family Medicine Research Tutor is responsible for facilitating the development of research skills of Family Medicine residents. Research skills will be consistent with the requirements of Family Medicine practice. The tutor will be responsible for facilitating tutorial or roundtable/small group discussion sessions as required by the Family Medicine curriculum for the PGY1 and PGY2 Family Medicine residents. In addition, Research Tutors will support the Family Medicine residents in the development and completion of their scholarly work (e.g., research projects, essays).
- Tutors may be supported by other experts in the field of research such as statisticians or practice-based researchers who enrich the learning experience of integrating the research questions and skills development with the practice of family medicine.
Specific Responsibilities
Educational
- Develops an in depth understanding of the requirements for research as it relates to accreditation of the program by the Canadian College of Family Physicians, and the program’s goals and objectives
- Develops the research skills curriculum for residents including the development, maintenance and implementation of research objectives in consultation with the Research Coordinator and Program Director
- Facilitates, contributes to, and / or authors research educational tools as required
- Provides educational sessions at academic days as required
- Co-tutors and / or facilitates tutorial discussions
- Available to the residents individually for guidance and support on as needed basis to facilitate completion of the research program deliverables. Support may be in person, telephone, WebEx/Skype or similar modality, or via email
- Provides effective feedback to the Residents during the tutorial process
- Facilitates and fosters self-evaluation and peer-evaluation amongst the Residents
- Evaluates, or facilitates evaluation of, resident research program deliverables
Administration
- Actively participates in research or program committee meetings as scheduled
- Collaborates with the Research Coordinator, other Research Tutors, and administrative support staff, to facilitate the research presentation day yearly
Qualifications
Education
- The preferred candidate will hold at least one of the following credentials: a) medical license for practice in Ontario and practicing in Northern Ontario; or b) post-graduate degree (i.e. PhD or Master’s) with research or teaching experience in a relevant field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM University
- Cognizant of the four principles of family medicine and associated research methodologies within the learning objectives of the research curriculum
- Background in research; a record of publication is highly desirable.
- Substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by regional and rural medical education
- Significant experience in the health care and academic sectors
- Self-motivated and directed
- Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- One-half (0.5) day per week
