NOSM: A Canadian tapestry of citizenry, collaboration and courage
NOSM was founded as the result of a grassroots effort by many community groups, municipalities, leaders and advocates who rallied together to make physician supply a priority in the North. As I continue to make community visits, I can see that the founding spirit for NOSM, while still alive, needs to be rekindled as we proceed to the next stages of NOSM’s future. Travels this week led me to several Northern communities. In Espanola, I met with Nicole Haley, CEO of Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre and Drs. Andre Michon and Kim Perlin. Kim is a NOSM grad and Andre is a grad of NOSM’s predecessor, the Northeastern Ontario Medical Education Corporation (NOMEC). Both stayed in the North, practice comprehensive medicine and have successfully recruited other NOSM grads with their creative and strong team approach. Insightful conversations that reach beyond the usual “meet and greet”. Sol Mamakwa, MPP for Kiiwetinoong, Ontario and former NOSM board member, shares many of my views when it comes to long-term strategies to address the health-care needs of Northern Ontario. We had a frank conversation about the role NOSM should play in advocacy and policy influence as we discussed many of the facts about the social determinants of health in Northern Ontario as outlined in my previous blog, “Uniquely Northern”.
