Reporting

The Emergency Medicine Research Coordinator reports to the Program Director, Emergency Medicine.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

The Research Coordinator, Emergency Medicine, is responsible for all aspects of the research curriculum for the Emergency Medicine residency program at NOSM University (NOSM U).

Educational Responsibilities

  • Develops an in depth understanding of the requirements for research as it relates to accreditation of the program by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the program’s goals and objectives.
  • Oversees the research skills curriculum for residents including the development, maintenance and implementation of research objectives
  • Supports the research projects of residents in the residency program
  • Acts as a resource for reviewing and improving the process of resident research
  • Participates in planning faculty development, as it relates to research
  • Contributes to the ongoing development of relevant clinical research by faculty members
  • Travels as needed to promote resident research across Northern Ontario
  • Organizes research days for residents to present their projects
  • Provides information to residents about available research awards
  • Facilitates submission of resident research for publication and/or presentation at external conferences
  • Assists with development of a journal club for residents

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Works with the Program Director and the Residency Program Committee (RPC) to make recommendations for overall research policy
  • Collaborates with the Assistant Dean, Research, NOSM U, to foster collaborative research across residency programs
  • Mandatory attendance at Residency Program Committee (RPC) meetings

Qualifications

Education

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario with certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U
  • Recent northern practice experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a preceptor
  • Knowledge of clinical medical research, policies and procedures as they apply to postgraduate medical education
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills
  • Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Two (2.0) days per month
