Reporting

The Academic Coordinator reports to the Program Director, Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

In conjunction with the Program Director, the Academic Coordinator is responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, and quality of all academic sessions for the Internal Medicine program.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Developing and coordinating content and presenters for the Academic Half Days, ensuring alignment with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons objectives
  • Coordinating and overseeing the scheduling of all academic sessions for Internal Medicine residents as part of the regular educational series
  • Collaborating with community Internists to develop academic sessions
  • Ensuring the quality, responsiveness, and relevance of the Internal Medicine program academic sessions, continuously aligning them with residents’ learning needs and Royal College objectives through ongoing evaluation and improvement
  • Monitoring the content and evaluations of the academic sessions
  • Liaising with Residency Program Committee (RPC) to discuss academic session content
  • Participating in the required committees and activities including the RPC
  • Promoting and developing academic activities throughout all NOSM University (NOSM U) teaching sites in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs and Continuing Education and Professional Development (FA and CEPD) Portfolios
  • Liaising with the Francophone Affairs Unit and the Indigenous Affairs Unit to facilitate the availability of Francophone and Indigenous educational presentations at the academic sessions
  • Annually reviewing the program content with the RPC to ensure academic accountability and that accreditation standards of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are met
  • Working closely with the Internal Medicine Program Director to provide leadership and meaningful contribution to core academic and assessment processes within Internal Medicine, including learner recruitment, competency-based evaluation, and simulation-based education
  • Fostering strong collaboration with the Internal Medicine Program Director and administrative team through regular strategic engagement and continuous communication to advance program priorities.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Member of RPC – attend RPC as voting member and provide a report around the Academic activities of the Program, to the open and the in-camera session as appropriate
  • Member of the IM Executive Committee – attend meetings at the call of the M Program Director and support the work of the IM Program

Qualifications

Education

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with certification from the RCPSC (or equivalent as determined by the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent regional practice experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent experience as a preceptor
  • Substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by regional and rural medical education
  • Significant experience in the health care and academic sectors
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills
  • Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Three (3.0) days per month
