PGY1 – NOSM/UofT

All PGY1 residents are concurrently enrolled in the Royal College Surgical Foundations (SF) Program: NOSM/UofT residents attend the two-week surgical “Prep Camp” in July in Toronto, then participate in labs and lectures throughout the year in Thunder Bay, and write the Royal College SF exam in the fall of their PGY2 year. Surgical Foundations is a Royal College Competence by Design program.

The PGY1 training comprises 13 four-week rotation blocks (1 block = approximately 4 weeks).

Location: The PGY1 year will be undertaken in Thunder Bay, with the exception of block 1, undertaken in Toronto.

  • 1 block Transition to Discipline (undertaken in Toronto; includes the two-week Surgical Prep Camp)
  • 4 blocks Core Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • 1 block Emergency Medicine
  • 2 blocks General Internal Medicine
  • 1 block General Surgery
  • 1 block Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 block Ultrasound
  • 2 blocks of selectives.

PGY2-5 – NOSM/UofT

  • The PGY2 year, core OBGYN is undertaken in Toronto.
  • The PGY3-5 years encompass subspecialty training and further core OBGYN training:

-Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility/Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynaecological Oncology, and Chief Resident rotations will be undertaken in Toronto for a total of 18 blocks, as a senior resident.

-Urogynaecology, senior core OBGYN, colposcopy, ultrasound, ambulatory and other selective rotations will be undertaken in Thunder Bay for a total of 18 blocks, as a senior resident.

-All residents are expected to complete a research project. The 3-block research experience allows the resident exposure to either clinical or basic science research under the guidance of Department faculty. All residents, including NOSM/UofT residents, are required to present their research at the UofT Annual Research Day. NOSM/UofT residents outside of Toronto at the time of the annual research day will have travel expenses fully covered by the program in order to participate. Satisfactory completion of residency training requires completion of a scholarly project and submission of original research.
