Meriem El Attar, Laurentian University

My clinical placement, completed through NOSM University (NOSM U), marked the culmination of my academic journey in speech-language pathology. It was an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience.

From start to finish, the support, organization, and supervision I received were truly outstanding. My clinical experience at the Timmins and District Hospital was incredibly diverse, providing numerous opportunities to apply my knowledge in a hospital setting. I had the opportunity to work with patients across various departments, including acute care, rehabilitation, and the stroke unit. This was made possible thanks to the guidance and mentorship of the dedicated speech-language pathologists in the rehabilitation department, who were exceptionally attentive and generous in sharing their expertise.

One of the most memorable aspects of this placement was participating in Modified Barium Swallow Studies. I also had the privilege of collaborating with an exceptional multidisciplinary team that included family physicians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, and social workers. This experience enabled me to apply key concepts from NOSM U’s Francophone Active Offer training, emphasizing the importance of delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate care.

I am deeply grateful for this incredible experience and extremely proud to have completed my clinical placement in such a supportive, stimulating, and welcoming environment.

Thank you, NOSM University and Laurentian University!

Rylee Wepruk

Rylee Wepruk is a proud resident of Northwestern Ontario and a 2011 graduate of the Dietetic Practicum Program (DPP). She began her career as a Dietitian at the diabetes program in Sioux Lookout, where she stayed for seven years and made many happy memories. While Sioux Lookout played a significant role in her professional journey, Rylee always intended to return to her hometown of Fort Frances. In 2018, she joined the Fort Frances Family Health Team, where she enjoyed outpatient counselling and the variety of nutrition care.

After starting a family, Rylee became more aware and interested in childhood development. In 2021, she had the opportunity to join an amazing team of passionate allied health professionals at Giishkaandago’Ikwe Health Services and the Child’s First Initiative team. The position combines both community nutrition and team-based pediatric services. She is constantly challenged to come up with innovative ways to explore food and healthy eating with clients and families. The preschool age is probably her favourite age to work with—it’s messy and fun.

In Rylee’s words, “My favourite memory from the DPP is the hands-on experience.  It was exciting to learn from preceptors, and I felt comfortable putting knowledge into practice.

Season’s Greetings, NOSM University!

As we approach the holidays and a well-deserved break across NOSM University, I am reflecting on my first month as President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean, and CEO. It has been a whirlwind of activity, but it has also been an incredibly rewarding and invigorating experience. Staff, faculty, learners, alumni, community partners, and donors: you have given me such a warm, authentic, and enthusiastic welcome back to Northern Ontario, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

Since starting on November 1, I have been immersed in making connections and doing deep learning about every aspect of NOSM University and the values for which it stands. From engaging at a Local Education Group meeting to attending the Family Medicine Forum in Vancouver, to my first Board of Governors and Senate meetings, and meeting with staff, faculty, students, and community members, I’ve gained even more appreciation for the dedication and passion that drives this institution. The shared commitment to providing high-quality medical education and delivering better access to health care across Northern Ontario is evident in every aspect of NOSM University.

One of my top priorities in 2025 is renewed strategic planning. This will involve a collaborative effort with interest holders from across the University and the broader region. I plan to visit communities across Northern Ontario—thoughtfully and with good climate stewardship in mind—to hear what people have to say. By working together, we can develop our next comprehensive plan that will guide NOSM University’s future growth and success so that we can continue to meet the evolving needs of Northern Ontario.

Also of note: we celebrate 20 years in 2025! Our campaign to mark the occasion is called “20 in 25,” and there is so much of which to be proud. Stay tuned for all the ways you can celebrate with us and expect to see this branding in our communications in the year ahead!

As we move into the new year, I am confident that we will keep up the momentum we have built. By fostering a culture of mutual support, teamwork, innovation, and excellence, we will continue to create a brighter future for NOSM University and a healthier Northern Ontario.

I encourage everyone to take some time to rest and recharge during the holiday season. Spend time with loved ones, practice self-care, and come back refreshed and ready to tackle the opportunities ahead. We have plenty of good work to do in 2025, and much to celebrate together.

Happy Holidays!
