To be eligible for an NOSM University Faculty Award of Excellence and Scholarship, nominees must hold an NOSM University faculty appointment and be actively engaged at NOSM University at the time of nomination. A faculty member, including Librarians (under the Human Sciences Division), is a full-time, part-time, joint, or adjunct (previously known as stipendiary) member in the Clinical, Medical, or Human Sciences Division.

Up to seven (7) of the awards may be given to members of the Clinical Sciences Division, up to three (3) to members of the Medical or Human Sciences Division (see section Faculty Award Categories).

A faculty member in good standing is a NOSM University faculty member with an active appointment in Clinical Sciences, Human Sciences, and/or Medical Sciences who remains eligible to carry out the responsibilities and privileges of that appointment, including teaching, learner supervision, research, academic service, leadership, clinical teaching, or other assigned academic activities, as applicable. Good standing requires compliance with NOSM University policies and procedures, applicable standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, appointment or reappointment requirements, and any relevant obligations imposed by affiliated institutions, hospitals, regulatory colleges, professional bodies, or funding/research authorities.

A faculty member will not be considered in good standing where a formal sanction, suspension, restriction, loss of required privileges, loss of required regulatory or professional status, termination, or other authorized institutional or regulatory action materially limits the faculty member’s ability to perform their NOSM University role. The existence of a complaint, concern, review, or investigation does not, on its own, remove a faculty member from good standing unless an authorized interim or final measure affecting the faculty member’s role has been imposed.

For faculty awards, nominations must be completed by a NOSM University-appointed faculty member. Nominators and nominees must hold a valid faculty appointment in NOSM University’s Clinical, Human, or Medical Sciences Divisions.

• Nominators and nominees must hold a valid faculty appointment in NOSM University’s Clinical, Human, or Medical Sciences Divisions and must be in good standing* with NOSM University. *See award categories for specific faculty division eligibility.
• Faculty may not self-nominate for an award.

Nominations must include:

• A completed Nomination Form.
• A letter of support on NOSM University Letterhead (no more than 500 words).
• A Curriculum Vitae.

All nominations must be submitted through the nomination form, and attachments must be submitted in Word or PDF format. If additional supporting documents are included in the submission, they should accompany the nomination form.

Nominators may submit one nomination per person using the NOSM University Faculty Awards of Excellence and Scholarship Nomination Form.

The nominator is responsible for ensuring that all information required on the nomination form is complete.

After the final submission deadline, no additional documents may be provided by the nominator or nominee.

The NOSM University Faculty Awards Working Group will review nominations and make final selections.

All nominees will receive written notification and congratulations regarding their nomination. Once all applications have been reviewed, recipients in each category will be notified and congratulated in writing.

This award recognizes individuals within the Clinical, Medical, or Human Sciences Divisions who exemplify strong academic and administrative leadership. Recipients demonstrate a clear commitment to NOSM University’s mission, provide mentorship and encouragement to others, and foster academic and professional growth among peers. They achieve outstanding results as leaders through their dedication, effectiveness, and positive impact on the university community, excelling in areas such as clinical excellence, teaching, scholarship, or administrative duties.

Academic Leader attributes include (but are not limited to):

• Demonstrates and promotes NOSM U’s Mission and Vision and social accountability mandate in leadership activities.
• Holds and effectively executes formal academic leadership roles (e.g., Program Director, Theme Chair, Module/Phase Coordinator, Committee Lead, Section Chair, etc.) and contributes meaningfully to institutional priorities through these roles.
• Actively mentors faculty and/or learners and supports the development of others in academic and leadership roles.
• Exhibits a fair, organized, and collaborative leadership approach and effectively manages responsibilities and balances leadership with other academic/clinical (if applicable) duties.
• Demonstrates sustained commitment to leadership through administrative, teaching and/or research/scholarship contributions.

The Clinical Faculty Mentorship Award recognizes the exemplary commitment of a Clinical Sciences faculty member in the mentorship of colleagues, staff and learners.

Nominees must be faculty for a minimum of five years.

*Note: Supervising or coaching faculty as part of the nominee’s role or mentoring students is not part of this award.

The Community Champion Award recognizes a Clinical Sciences faculty member who has significantly impacted their community through clinical services, teaching, research, volunteer work, or other community involvement, and who continually advocates for accessibility to the best available health care. Contributions must be for at least 10 years.

• One award for a member of the Clinical Sciences Division

Community Champion attributes include (but are not limited to):

• Actively involved in NOSM U education programs (teaching, scholarly activity, academic service and/or leadership role).
• Demonstrates a commitment to NOSM U’s social accountability mandate.
• Demonstrates strong advocacy for high-quality, accessible health care in Northern Ontario or a particular community in Northern Ontario.
• Demonstrates leadership through mentorship and collaborative engagement with interprofessional colleagues and community members and/or organizations.
• Is an active community volunteer.

The New Clinical Faculty Leader Award recognizes an early-career clinical faculty member (first 5 years) who demonstrates exceptional leadership, initiative, and impact since joining the institution as a faculty member. This award honours individuals who show outstanding promise as academic leaders through meaningful contributions to teaching, scholarly activity, clinical practice, service, mentorship, and community engagement.

This award celebrates leadership not defined solely by formal titles, but by initiative, influence, integrity, and measurable impact.
