Reporting

The Postgraduate Medical Education Learning and Assessment Lead reports to the Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs, for medical education activities, financial matters and non-academic policy and strategy.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

The PGME Learning and Assessment Lead has the following main responsibilities:

  • Develops into a content expert, collaborating with PGME programs and program directors to draft learner Enhanced Learning Plans (ELP), Remediation and Probation plans.
  • Provide advice, resources, and support to any residency program, program director, or resident requesting guidance with the creation and implementation of effective ELPs, Remediation and Probation plans, particularly where there have been concerns about a Resident’s progress.
  • Act as a resource to faculty and programs to share best practices in learner educational support, remediation, and assessment.
  • Provides advice on the review and updating of PGME policies related to assessment, progression, remediation, and probation of residents.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Seek out and develop resources and tools to provide needed Enhanced Learning Plan, Coaching and Remediation expertise to the Residency programs.
  • Develop faculty who are interested in remediation, coaching, and assessment, by leading and collaborating on faculty development workshops, learning series, resources, and tools.
  • Review and continually work with PGME to develop and refine effective policy and processes for the assessment of resident performance.
  • Identify and support those providing remediation expertise or other individuals who are willing to respond to questions and queries.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Collaborates closely with colleagues, including the Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs, the Senior Director of PGME, and the Resident Affairs Coordinator.
  • With the assistance of the Resident Affairs Coordinator, develops a library of useful resources and example plans based on the CanMEDS framework.
  • Prepares reports and updates for the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee (PGMEC) and other groups upon request.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from program directors, residents, and faculty members.
  • Recruit and support remediation resource faculty members and coaches in PGME and work to develop resources for an Integrated Academic Support Program that will evolve across all NOSM programs.
  • Leads the communication strategy to ensure residents, faculty and programs are aware of the academic support available.
  • Work with CEPD to ensure that faculty development related to remediation is readily available to faculty both at a foundational and an advanced level.
  • Employ a CQI approach to PGME remediation policies, processes, and resources and advise the PGME Associate Dean on trends related to remediation and develop improvement action plans in conjunction with the Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs and PGME Office leadership.

Qualifications

Education

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM University.
  • Experience in medical education, academic leadership, coaching, and/or remediation is an asset.
  • Experience in developing work plans to meet strategic goals.
  • Experience in developing faculty education workshops.
  • Knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by distributed community engaged medical education.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in remediation and learner support.
  • Leadership skills in managing meetings, workflows, and motivating teams.
  • Ability to provide compassionate and confidential guidance to learners experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Knowledge of other resources at NOSM University to help support learners.

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • One-half (0.5) day per week
