NOSM University Medical Learners Connect with Northern Recruiters

Posted on October 26, 2026

An event designed to support physician recruitment in the North brought together NOSM University medical learners and health-care recruiters on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The Northern Ontario Community Concierge and Connection Event promoted career opportunities for physicians and training opportunities for medical learners. Studies, including a long-term study at NOSM University, show that medical learners are most likely to stay where they have trained.

Recruiters attended from more than 20 communities across Northern Ontario—from Kenora and Sioux Lookout in the Northwest to Hearst, Timmins, and Mattawa in the Northeast. The event was held in response to community recruiters’ requests for a Northern Ontario-based forum to connect with NOSM University learners. It provided an opportunity for communities to engage directly with the next generation of physicians.

The event helped medical students and residents—and their partners—envision what living in Northern communities could look like for their families. The happiness of partners and families is an important part of deciding where to practise, and this event created space for partners to connect with communities and explore what Northern Ontario has to offer.

“Building relationships between learners, clinicians in practice, and local communities is fundamental to addressing the unique health challenges and evolving needs of Northern Ontario,” says Dr. Sarah Newbery, Associate Dean, Physician Workforce Strategy at NOSM University. “Northern Ontario is an incredible place to live, learn, and build a career. Our goal is to connect learners with communities where they can have fulfilling experiences—whether that’s a learning opportunity, locum work, or a long-term career.”

“There’s no one-size-fits-all model for physician recruitment. That’s why these meaningful connections are key to highlighting the incredible opportunities that exist right here in the North for learners and their families,” said Stefan Smit, Physician Recruiter for Sioux Lookout and region.

Held at the Valhalla Hotel and Conference Centre, the event included a full day of professional development for community recruiters. In its second year, the event alternates between Sudbury and Thunder Bay. It was held in tandem with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada’s Mini Rural and Remote Conference, which hosted rural physicians from across Canada for networking and professional development in Thunder Bay from October 24-25.
