NOSM Invites Communities to Contribute to Time Capsules

Posted on October 4, 2011

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) marked a significant milestone this year – for the first time, NOSM MD Charter Class graduates who have undertaken family medicine residency at NOSM have completed their training and are fully-licensed physicians. In other words, there are now individuals who have successfully completed the full spectrum of medical education at the School; a journey which began with entry into NOSM’s MD program in 2005, and has now finished with the completion of NOSM’s family medicine residency training six years later, in 2011.

In honour of this milestone, NOSM is calling upon all Northern Ontario people and communities to contribute to the School’s Time Capsules. NOSM invites individuals, organizations, and municipalities to write and submit “Letters to the Future,” which include the submitters’ thoughts, reflections, and anticipations for the School. These letters will be sealed in two Time Capsules located at NOSM’s East and West campuses in the Health Science Libraries. The Time Capsules will be opened in 44 years time.

“Letters to the Future”

What would you preserve for future generations if you could tell the story of NOSM? When writing “Letters to the Future,” consider such questions as:

-What is your vision of access to and quality of health care in the future?
-How do you anticipate or wish health care will change in your community as a result of NOSM?
-What do you hope NOSM will achieve in the next 50 years?
-What were your experiences with NOSM students and residents who have lived and learned in your community?
-What are your hopes for NOSM’s future impact on the health of the people and communities of Northern Ontario?

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for individuals, organizations, and municipalities to participate in a Time Capsule project with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The NOSM Time Capsules will both capture the present and record the North’s hopes for future generations, and will be opened in 2055. This date will represent the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the School.

Visit the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s website at www.nosm.ca/timecapsule to view guidelines for entries and to electronically submit your “Letter to the Future.” Submissions will be printed and inserted into NOSM’s Time Capsules before they are sealed in December 2011.

The deadline to submit entries is December 1, 2011.
