PGY3 Family Medicine Enhanced Skills

NOSM University’s Enhanced Skills (PGY3) programs are designed to prepare Family Medicine graduates for the unique realities of practicing in Northern, rural, remote, and underserved communities. Physicians working in these settings often require broader scopes of practice, advanced procedural skills, and the confidence to manage complex clinical situations with limited access to tertiary care resources and specialist support. Our programs are intentionally designed to address these realities through meaningful, community-focused training experiences rooted in Northern Ontario.

By combining the strengths of distributed community learning environments with academic and specialty training centres, NOSM University provides residents with practical, hands-on educational experiences that reflect the diverse healthcare needs of the populations they will serve. Residents develop advanced clinical competencies while also strengthening leadership, adaptability, collaboration, and decision-making skills essential for independent practice in resource-variable settings.

At the core of NOSM University’s Enhanced Skills programs is a learner-centered approach. In addition to achieving the objectives and competencies of each discipline, residents are encouraged to pursue individualized learning goals that align with their future practice intentions and professional interests. Programs are designed to provide both structure and flexibility, allowing residents to tailor portions of their training to create meaningful and relevant educational experiences. This balance supports self-directed learning while ensuring graduates are well prepared to provide high-quality care within their chosen area of enhanced practice.

Whether training in community hospitals, rural clinics, regional centres, or academic environments, residents benefit from close mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exposure to the realities of healthcare delivery across Northern Ontario. NOSM University’s Enhanced Skills programs are committed to developing compassionate, skilled, and practice-ready physicians who can contribute meaningfully to the health of Northern communities and beyond.
