Reporting

The Anesthesiology Academic Coordinator reports to the Program Director of the NOSM U Royal College Anesthesiology Program.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

In conjunction with the Program Director, the Academic Coordinator is responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, and quality of all academic sessions for the Anesthesiology program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing the content and organizing presenters for the Academic half days
  • Coordinating and overseeing the scheduling of all academic sessions for Anesthesia residents as part of the regular educational series
  • Assuring the quality, responsiveness and relevancy of the Anesthesia program academic sessions as they pertain to residents’ needs, including monitoring the content and evaluations of the academic sessions
  • Liaising with Residency Program Committee (RPC) to discuss academic session content
  • Participating in the required committees (including the RPC and Competence Committee (CC)) and activities (including, but not limited to, regular resident file reviews and attending the bi-annual resident program review meeting)
  • Promoting and developing academic activities throughout all NOSM University (NOSM U) teaching sites
  • Annually reviewing the program content with the RPC to ensure academic accountability and that accreditation standards of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are met
  • Evaluation of resident comprehension of core academic content, which includes creation of bi-annual core academic written examination.  This requires review of submitted written exam questions from facilitators/faculty and creation of additional exam questions, ensuring that the references reflect the most up-to-date and relevant anesthesiology resources that align with the RCPSC study and reference materials
  • Overseeing and assuring the quality of the Social Accountability curriculum
  • Overseeing and assuring the quality of the Wellness Curriculum

Qualifications

Education

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with Anesthesiology certification from the RCPSC (or equivalent as determined by the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education)
  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by Northern Ontario regional and rural medical education
  • Significant experience in the health care and academic sectors
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Three (3.0) days per month
