Competition Number: 2026-2075-NSThis position will actively participate in various research activities by designing qualitative, and to a lesser degree, quantitative research experiments and analyses of the data in support of our applied rural health focused research program in Northern Ontario. The Research Associate requires an advanced level of knowledge of related scientific theory, principles and practices.
This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.
Responsibilities
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:
- Supports the various research projects presently in progress such as: “Wheels, Wings and Rotors: Understanding Challenges and Identifying Solutions to Improve High-Acuity Patient Transport in Rural Northern Ontario” and “Prepared to Deliver. What’s Needed to Develop a Rural Obstetrics Ready Physician Workforce for Northern Ontario?”
- Supports the development and writing of grant applications to support the research programs of the Primary Investigators.
- Designs various research experiments in support of the research interests of the supervising physicians which can include conducting detailed complex statistical analyses on large administrative data sets using complex techniques as well as making recommendations to the Principal Investigator (PI);
- Applies specialized knowledge to review, appraise and interpret published literature, summarize research findings, and draft scientific reports, ethics documents and grant proposals;
- Independently gathers, compiles, and conducts complex analyses of data in preparation for manuscripts for publication;
- Develops new experimental protocols, methods, and standard operating procedures;
- Acts as a key resource for the PIs and/or other research staff by providing technical expertise, guidance and/or mentorship to junior level researchers or students;
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with external partners which may include presenting research findings;
- Keeps abreast of evolving research practices and policies;
- Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analyses, statistical analyses, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results;
- Co-author or author research results;
- Responsible for supervision of summer students, including medical students, working on research with the team as well as graduate students;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- A Master’s degree from a recognized university.
- PhD from a recognized university preferred.
- Completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans Course on Research Ethics (TCPS 2: CORE) or the updated equivalent is required, but can be obtained shortly after hire.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of related experience is required
- Previous research experience at an advanced level;
- Experience using qualitative research software and research equipment;
- High level of expertise in particular research discipline, with experience with and training in multiple research methodologies;
- Working independently within general guidelines while adhering to privacy and data confidentiality requirements;
- Proven record of publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals;
- Ability to conduct statistical analyses SPSS is not required but would be considered an asset;
- Knowledge of research funding opportunities and required elements for grant applications would be considered an asset.

- Must be able to delegate responsibility to research team members while providing them support;
- Work within established organizational practices, protocols, and policies;
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension);
- French/Indigenous or other language skills would be considered an asset.
