Launching at NOSM University, Aurora Helps Preserve Scholarship

A critical new research tool launched at NOSM University on September 14, 2026. Aurora, an institutional repository, is designed to gather and preserve the scholarship of NOSM University faculty, staff, and learners, and to share it with people in Northern Ontario—and researchers around the world.

Aurora will be home to all NOSM University scholarship: journal articles, conference papers, posters, theses from master’s programs, and other research outputs. NOSM University community members will need to submit their work to Aurora. Anyone with an internet connection can access the institutional repository. Research will be widely discoverable via general and research-specific online search engines. When an item is added to Aurora, people from communities and organizations across Northern Ontario and beyond can find it, read it, and cite it, increasing NOSM University’s research impact and social accountability.

Aurora is administered by the Health Sciences Library and hosted by Scholaris, a service of the Ontario Consortium of University Libraries. It was implemented with the support of NOSM University IT and with funding from the Dr. Gilles Arcand Centre for Health Equity. 

The new institutional repository helps open the door for funding from the tri-agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada—the three federal research funding bodies in Canada that support academic research, training, and innovation. Tri-agency grant holders are required to include copies of their funded research studies in an institutional repository. As NOSM University works towards Tri-Agency eligibility, Aurora is an important step towards meeting eligibility requirements.
