While advocating for equitable access to care, the university contributes to the economic development of Northern Ontario. NOSM University relies on the commitment and expertise of the peoples of Northern Ontario to educate health-care professionals to practise in Indigenous, Francophone, rural, remote, and underserved communities. With a focus on diversity, inclusion, and advocacy, NOSM University is an award-winning, socially accountable organization renowned for its innovative model of distributed, community-engaged education and research.

    • Of this, we need 150 specialists and over 200 family physicians and 110 of these in rural communities.
  • Teaching occurs in clinics, at hospitals, and in family health teams in Sault Ste. Marie.
    • Of the 156 NOSM University faculty members practising in Sault Ste. Marie, 7 self-identify as Francophone and 5 self-identify as Indigenous.
    • Ten faculty members are in NOSM University leadership positions.
    •  From 2019 to 2023, Sault Ste. Marie has welcomed more than 270 learners.
