Northern Ontario’s 800,000 residents need more than 400 doctors today.
NOSM University trains doctors from the North, for the North—graduates who are far more likely to stay and serve in Northern, rural, remote, Indigenous and Francophone communities. Students from the North graduate with nearly twice the debt of their peers, not because of higher tuition, but because people in the region don’t have access to the same financial and social means as students in the South.
Your gift helps change that. By contributing to bursaries, you reduce barriers and help Northern Ontarians get better access to the care they need.
Since 2005:
- 1,041 MDs graduated – 92 Indigenous, 214 Francophone.
- Over half of our graduates practise in Northern Ontario.
- Nearly 50% choose family medicine, compared to 38% nationally.
Shape the future of health care in Northern Ontario.
The Truth Award
Advancing Reconciliation Through Education
In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), NOSM University established the Truth Award. This fund:
-

Promotes reconciliation and long-term health improvements in Indigenous communities.
Every gift to the Truth Award helps Indigenous students succeed and brings culturally competent care to communities across the North.
The Maureen Lacroix Francophone Bursary
Help Remove Language as a Barrier to Care
The Maureen Lacroix Francophone Bursary supports Francophone medical learners at NOSM University, helping to remove financial barriers and strengthen French-language health care across Northern Ontario. By investing in Francophone students, you are ensuring that patients in Francophone communities have access to culturally and linguistically appropriate care close to home.
NOSM University MD General Bursary
The NOSM University MD General Bursary provides vital financial aid to medical students—many of whom carry nearly twice the debt of peers at other Canadian medical schools. This gap isn’t due to higher tuition, but to socioeconomic disparities in Northern Ontario, including higher travel costs for remote placements and fewer financial resources for students from the region. Your gift helps future physicians focus on their studies, not their debt.
