The Learning Environment Lead, Clinical Sciences, is responsible for the triage, management, and system-level monitoring of professionalism concerns involving NOSM University’s clinical faculty. The role supports fair, consistent, and educationally focused responses to professionalism issues, in partnership with hospital partners, Section Chairs, Learner Support Services, and University Policy and Regulatory Compliance.
The NOSM University (NOSM U) Learning Environment Lead is in the Clinical Sciences Division in the Clinical Partnerships and Hospital Relations portfolio and will report to the Associate Dean, Clinical, Faculty Affairs, and will work in collaboration with the Director of Learner Support Services.
Responsibilities
Provide assistance on a range of stipendiary clinical faculty professionalism matters including:
- Acting as the main point of contact for clinical faculty complaints
- Triaging concerns and complaints involving clinical faculty relating to the learning environment and redirecting to the appropriate unit as necessary
- Receive and assess concerns and complaints related to clinical faculty, including following up with involved parties to understand the context, clarify details and determine appropriate next steps and/or course of action in accordance with NOSM University clinical faculty policies and procedures
- Working collaboratively with the Office of Learner Support Services and University Policy & Regulatory Compliance to develop, implement and update the application of mistreatment policies and procedures
- Developing, updating and implementing various clinical faculty-related policies, procedures and processes related to professionalism
Key Accountabilities
- Working with NOSM U’s hospital partners, affiliated sites and LEGs, if indicated, to triage complaints and ensure clinical faculty complaints are appropriately triaged and managed
- Supporting the Section Chairs and the Associate Dean, Clinical Faculty Affairs by conducting clinical faculty investigations within the scope of existing policies and procedures
- Supporting and informing an evolving faculty complaints process for the Clinical Sciences Division with associated accountabilities and the goal of continuous quality improvement
- Supporting the Section Chairs and Associate Dean, Clinical Faculty Affairs, with interpreting and applying any discipline procedures and remediation decisions and plans according to existing policies
- Collaborating with CEPD to support the creation and roll-out of faculty development sessions related to professionalism
- Working with the Director of Learner Support Services and/or delegate for the ongoing management of the mistreatment reporting and investigation process
- Maintain strict confidentiality and manage information in accordance with NOSM University privacy policies and applicable legislation, and identify and manage conflicts of interest, including recusal and referral when required
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine degree
- Must have a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be in good standing with the CPSO and have five years’ clinical and teaching experience
- Should have a faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor or higher at an Ontario school of medicine
- Must be a member of PCTA
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Experience receiving and assessing complaints.
- Experience leading and conducting investigations related to alleged professionalism allegations including but not limited to:
- Allegations of disrespectful or demeaning behaviour towards learners.
- Reports that a faculty member failed to provide a safe or supportive learning environment, including intimidation or inappropriate tone.
- Concerns about retaliation or negative treatment after a learner provides feedback.
- Allegations of inappropriate personal boundaries with learners or colleagues.
- Concerns about misuse of position of authority, such as favouritism, inappropriate social invitations, or unprofessional social media conduct.
- Repeated failure to attend scheduled teaching, supervise learners, or meet departmental obligations without reasonable justification.
- Concerns related to poor documentation, tardiness, or unresponsiveness to administrative/academic communications.
- Allegations of dishonesty in academic responsibilities, such as misrepresenting teaching hours or academic contributions.
- Concerns about inaccurate reporting related to evaluations or assessments.
- Willingness to attend continuing professional development as related to conducting investigations
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- One and one-half (1.5) days per week
