Assistant Dean, Research Apply Online!
Competition Number: 2025-2019-RCUnder the direction of the Vice President Research and Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean, Research, is responsible for aspects of planning, development, and implementation of a research strategy compatible with the NOSM University Strategic Plan. The position has an administrative stipend of $10,000 per academic year and has a teaching remission of a minimum of 2.5 teaching credits with the possibility of additional teaching credits to be discussed and agreed as per the Collective Agreement (Ref. Article 2.2, A, (iv), b).
Responsibilities
Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
- Contribute to the overall research profile of NOSM in conjunction with the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies;
- Advise the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies on strategies to improve the University’s research profile;
- Keep informed about research funding programs that could relate to NOSM University and encourage faculty members to apply for research funding;
- Make connections with and among researchers and institutions to enable applications for large project funding;
- Oversee research laboratory space (wet and dry labs) on both the Thunder Bay and Sudbury campuses;
- Participate as an ex-officio member of the Senate;
- Participate in NOSM University research-related committees and contribute to research review award committees;
- Chair the Northern Health Research Conference;
- Contribute to advisory committees as needed for research related matters;
- Participate as needed in regional, national and international research-related committees;
- Communicate and consult with other Research Offices to promote interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research efforts;
- Liaise with and support Division Heads in facilitating research career development and support of faculty members’ research needs;
- Participate in strategic planning and budget development processes; and
- May be invited to participate in the University’s senior leadership and/or senior academic leadership group(s).
Qualifications
Education
- The successful candidate must hold a PhD, MD or equivalent degree and must be a NOSM faculty member.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in health or medical research
- Experience in research activities including applying for and receiving grant funds, managing a research program, publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals, protecting intellectual property and attending research conferences
- Experience in promoting a productive research environment to foster the research of others
- Commitment to develop innovative research strategies in northern, rural and remote environments, including Indigenous and Francophone communities
- Experience with interdisciplinary approaches to research
- Experience with rural, Indigenous and/or Francophone communities preferred
- Superior communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Flexible and comfortable with diversity
- Respect for individuals and due process
- Strong leadership and decision making skills
- Effective team player and team leader
- Open, collegial consultative management style
- Ability to mentor and encourage career progression in others

Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
