Overview
The Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) program at NOSM University (NOSM U) offers clinical placements for students during the second year of Phase 1 of the program. These experiences are referred to as Early Clinical Placements (ECPs) and occur in two dedicated 2-week blocks during the fall (October) and winter (February) terms. Clinical experiences during ECPs are leveled to the pre-clerkship stage of learning and students are required to complete one ECP during one of the two dedicated blocks to be promoted to Year 3.
The Theme 5 Phase 1 Clinical Placement Lead supports the clinical and curricular learning objectives of Phase 1 clinical placements to ensure a high-quality educational experience and learning environment.
Reporting
This position reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education. Collegial and collaborative supervision, leadership and guidance, including delegation of tasks and contribution to performance review, will be provided by the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, and the Theme 5 Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM), Clinical Committee Co-Chairs.
Responsibilities
Educational Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development, delivery, and ongoing review of the ECP curriculum, including defining mandatory learning experiences (such as Required Clinical Learning Experiences – RCLEs) and promotion requirements of ECPs.
- Ensure that the ECP curriculum aligns with NOSM University social accountability mandate, vision, mission, and values.
- Collaborate on the review and revision of policies, procedures, and guidelines related to pre-clerkship clinical placements.
- Work with the UME Instructional Designer(s) on the annual review and revision of faculty and student resources for ECP as it relates to clinical curriculum.
- Develop and deliver ECP orientation sessions for students and faculty prior to each block.
- Act as a point of contact for students, preceptors, and staff inquiries during ECP blocks; redirects the inquiry to the appropriate contact(s) where appropriate.
- Participate in the development and review of student assessment, preceptor and program evaluation forms related to ECP.
- Promote accreditation compliance through provision of timely assessment by managing instances of incomplete student assessment forms related to ECP.
- Respond to any issues related to student assessment concerns reported by ECP preceptors as directed by the ICM Co-Chairs.
- Engage in the review of ECP Program Evaluation feedback and the UME Curriculum Quality Improvement cycle with relevant Theme and Phase Chairs.
- Prepare and present an annual report on ECPs to the UME Curriculum Committee.
- Consult with the UME Administrative Manager, Program Delivery and UME Community Curriculum Coordinator who oversee all operational aspects and administrative coordination of ECPs.
- Liaise with the Community Relations Unit (CRU) to support capacity-building and relationships through engagement with clinical partners across Northern Ontario.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Serve as a voting member on the Theme 5 ICM Committee, which addresses the clinical elements of the UME curriculum in Phase 1.
- Attend other committees, working groups, or panels as determined by the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education.
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine Degree
- Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have (or be eligible for) a faculty appointment with NOSM University
- Must have experience or an interest in cultural competency and considerations
- Must have current or previous experience as a Rural Generalist physician
- Preference will be given to candidates residing in Northern Ontario
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- Two (2.0) days per month
