NOSM University Names Dr. Emily Groot as New Section Chair

Dr. Emily Groot has been appointed Section Chair, Public Health and Preventative Medicine (PHPM) at NOSM University, effective October 1, 2026. In this role, she will foster excellence in teaching and research by supporting faculty, strengthening clinical and academic programs, and ensuring that learners benefit from quality training in the fields of public health and preventative medicine. 

Based in Sudbury, Dr. Groot is an Associate Professor at NOSM University and has served as the Program Director for PHPM since 2021. She has led nationally recognized curriculum innovations and the PHPM program’s successful transition to Competence by Design. Dr. Groot is cross appointed at the University of Global Health Equity in Butaro, Rwanda, where she teaches epidemiology.  Her considerable clinical and leadership experience includes medical director roles in harm reduction and HIV/Hepatitis C care and Associate Medical Officer of Health roles in Sudbury, Niagara, and Thunder Bay.  

Dr. Groot recently earned national distinction from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, who honoured her as 2026 Program Director of the Year for her role as PHPM Program Director at NOSM University.
