The Kennedy International Anesthesia Resident Fund helps international residents in the Anaesthesiology Program at NOSM University—particularly those arriving from Guyana or other countries outside of Canada—to pursue advanced medical training in Northern Ontario.
This fund reflects NOSM University’s ongoing commitment to diversity, global collaboration, and excellence in medical education. By helping to cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses during their 3–5 month rotation at NOSM University, the fund eases the transition for these residents and supports their success as they gain valuable clinical experience in Canada’s North.
Each year, one or more international Anaesthesiology residents are selected to receive this support. The allocation of funds is determined by the Anaesthesiology Program at NOSM University, under the guidance and discretion of the Section Chair of Anaesthesia. Funding may be drawn from both the fund’s capital and interest, as needed, to meet the needs of eligible residents.

“The training experience at NOSM University provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in obstetric, cardiac, neuro and thoracic anesthesia. I came back to Guyana eager to apply the skills gained and must say that the quality of patient care I perform has greatly improved. During my elective I participated in managing complex cases and learned advanced techniques with my main focus being obstetric anesthesia. I also gained exposure to simulation based training for critical care scenarios, improving my crisis management skills. I had the opportunity to collaborate with mentors who helped me to improve my communication skills and teamwork skills in high pressure situations. The greatest take home from my experience at NOSM was the ability to develop strategies for implementing best practices in our resource constrained setting. Since graduation I have participated in mentorship, teaching to both nurse and physician residents as well as managing the maternity theatre at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.“
