These funds help ease the financial burden of students and, in turn, help improve the health of the people of Northern Ontario by allowing students to focus more on becoming great medical practitioners.

At the time there were no specialized doctors in the Sudbury area forcing the Drewe’s down south to the Toronto area. After his lengthy battle with the disease came to an end, Ms. Drewe decided to create an endowment which would help young medical students research Rheumatoid Arthritis. Ms. Drewe believes that this is the best way to remember her husband and help in the fight for a cure. Swartz Memorial Bursary Established in 2009 by Jill Swartz, Jo Swartz and Richard Silverman and, Mark, Helen, Sarah and Zachary Swartz in honor of their parents and grandparents. Dr. Mel Swartz was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay) and graduated from Queen’s University in Medicine in 1937. He interned in Vancouver, then worked in Alaska and northern BC. Volunteering with the British in the Second World War, Mel served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in India, Burma and the Pacific area. He returned to Canada after the war, and completed training as a Urologist at Queen’s. For 45 years, he practiced Urology in Winnipeg. Mel Swartz was dedicated to his work and to his patients who loved him. Ruby, his dear wife, was a poet in her own right and Mel’s moral compass, greatest love and kindred spirit. For sixty years, they delighted in theatre, ballet, symphony, and opera. When Mel retired, age 81, they donated the substantial collection of Inuit Art which had crowded every inch of his office walls to The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Ruby and Mel valued their family and friends, the arts, education, integrity, honesty and fun. Awarded to a student in any year at NOSM University. 312 nfoxon 18/12/2024 02:35 PM nfoxon 18/12/2024 02:37 PM Both Campuses Dr. Annabella Zawada Memorial Bursary Dr. Annabella Zawada was an incredible family physician that tragically lost her life in October 2021. She grew up in Thunder Bay after immigrating from Poland as a child. Annabella was an excellent student, always at the top of her class in elementary, high school, and university. She graduated from Lakehead University with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology degree before going to medical school at the University of Toronto. Upon completion of medical school, she did her residency in Northwestern Ontario practicing throughout the region before joining a clinic in the small town of Terrace Bay in 2005. Annabella worked at the McCausland Hospital and served as Lead Physician, Emergency Room Doctor, and Chief of Staff, as well as Associate Professor at Lakehead University School of Medicine. She even became the regional Coroner when she saw the need in her community. Annabella’s work was greatly appreciated by the Terrace Bay community for her love and passion. She was always an incredible advocate for patients willing to fight for them to receive an appropriate level of healthcare. The community nominated Annabella, and she won a Top 20 Under 40 Northern Ontario Visionary Award in 2014. In 2016, Annabella and her family moved back to Thunder Bay. Shortly thereafter she opened the unique Umbrella Sexual Health Clinic as she saw a major need for accessible, non-judgemental sexual health services. Annabella firmly believed in the philosophies of “Love is Love” and “Equality for Everyone”. Annabella touched the lives of many people from all walks of life. She was a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, and most of all; an amazing person that loved to help those in need. One nurse colleague when describing Annabella said - “When we see a puddle, we step around it. Bella cleans it up, finds the leak and fixes it.” She will be missed by many, and this Bursary has been established by her family and friends to recognize her and hope her story inspires future family physicians.
