We understand you likely have many questions about the recruitment process at NOSM University. Below are frequently asked questions about both the application and interview stages. If you have questions not covered in the topics below, please email them directly to hr@nosm.ca.

Application FAQs

How do I complete an application for a position listed under Staff Opportunities?

Your application for a position is the first impression you will be giving of yourself to the hiring manager. Be sure to take the necessary time to complete the application in its entirety, in an accurate and professional manner.

Our recruitment process is based on selecting the candidate who most closely fits the requirements set out in the role profile as demonstrated in the application form and supporting statement/CV.

You will be required to apply through our online system for any staff positions. Refer to the User Guide for details on how to create a bio and apply online as an external applicant. Creating an account with the system will make it easier to apply in the future as well. NOTE: Internal applicants are able to login through the SharePoint site.

Please note, there may be different applications processes for academic positions and you should follow the application directions in the posting. Refer to the Academic Opportunities website for more information.

What should I include in my cover letter and resume?

Think about you target audience as they will make decisions about the shortlist based on the cover letter and resume. Be sure to tailor your cover letter and resume to the position you are applying for as detailed in the posting.

Your cover letter should provide a brief introduction to your resume (or CV) and a summarization of your related experience. It is best to keep it long enough to be comprehensive, but short enough so the hiring supervisor is not intimidated by the length. Be sure to include information of how you meet the specifications for the role and why the position is of interest to you.

With respect to your resume, it is important to detail your education, employment history (including dates), as well as a brief summary of your responsibilities and accomplishments. Be sure to list transferrable skills that a hiring supervisor may be seeking. It is important to include your current contact information as well.

How do I know if you received my application?

After you submit your online application, you will receive an email confirming we received it. Check your spam folder if you do not notice it in your Inbox shortly after you apply.

Will I be told about the outcome of my application?

While all responses will be appreciated and handled with the strictest confidence, only those being considered for interviews will be acknowledged through our standard procedure of email notification. In the event an email address is not provided, selected candidates with be contacted by telephone.

I missed the deadline for a position. Can I still apply?

Generally speaking, yes. Depending on the stage of the recruitment process, you may be able to still apply by emailing your application directly to hr@nosm.ca. However, please note all applications received on time will be considered prior to reviewing your application as a ‘Late Applicant.’

Interview FAQs

If I am selected for an interview, what is the process?

Typically, the interview process involves an in-person or WebEx (virtual) interview with the hiring panel. As part of this process, you will be required to complete a skills test or asked to prepare a presentation, or portfolio. While skills tests are completed after the interview, presentations are made during the process.  In doing so, the hiring panel is able to fully assess your skills and abilities for the role.

What do I bring to the interview?

You do not need to bring any additional copies of your application or resume — we have everything we need. As mentioned, some positions may require you to provide a written assignment or portfolio as part of the interview process.

How soon will I know if I have the job?

We will make every effort to contact you as soon as possible to let you know of the selection panel’s decision. All of us have been in the same position and we understand how difficult it can be to be patient and wait to be contacted. Typically, we update all applicants of whether or not they are successful for the role within a two week timeframe.
