OPSEU Staff Unit Collective Agreement Ratified

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is pleased to announce the ratification of a first collective agreement covering approximately 150 office, clerical, administrative, technical and service positions at the School. The OPSEU Staff Unit voted 78.2 percent in favour of the tentative agreement on November 5, 2010, and the agreement was ratified by NOSM’s Board of Directors earlier today. The first collective agreement is in effect until April 30, 2012, and provides for a retroactive 2009/10 wage increase of 3.25 percent, followed by 0 percent wage increases in years two and three. NOSM and OPSEU Staff Unit Heading Back to Table with Provincially-Appointed Mediator

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and the OPSEU Staff Unit have agreed to resume bargaining November 1, 2010 in Thunder Bay. The negotiations will be assisted by a provincially-appointed mediator. Guyana’s Dr. Alan Tinnie is going home. Dr. Tinnie is a general surgeon who, after graduating from the University of Guyana, came to Canada to further gain skills as a “fellow.” A fellow is a physician specialist, such as a surgeon, who does additional training within their specialty. This was the first fellowship opportunity offered by the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) to a surgeon. In this case, the fellowship was offered in the surgical specialty of endoscopy. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) held its Annual Members and Board of Directors meetings on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.
