Have a Heart-to-Heart with your Medical School!

During the month of February, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) invites all community members to have a heart-to-heart with the medical school made in the North, for the North. As part of NOSM’s tenth anniversary, the medical school is opening its doors and inviting the public to come and learn about your medical school. There will be refreshments, and it is free to everyone!

At the « I <3 NOSM » Open House, guests will be able to:

Try out medical equipment, such as laparoscopic scopes.
Engage in activities about medical simulation and clinical skills, just like a medical student.
Learn about how NOSM is accountable to the needs of the people of the North.
See where ground-breaking health research takes place.
Engage in guided or self-guided tours of the medical school.
Learn about the requirements for getting into medical school.
Hear about how NOSM contributes to the community.
View an optional screening of a documentary made about NOSM by Dr. Hoi Cheu, Associate Professor at Laurentian University.

NOSM Professors Receive Prestigious Research Project of the Year Award (Revision)

Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) Professors Dr. Ashley Scott and Dr. Greg Ross were recently presented with the Research Project of the Year Award by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Ross, Scott, and their team of graduate students collaborated with Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO, a Glencore company) in Falconbridge, Ontario on the research project, titled ‘Industrial off-gas supports biofuel production.’ The goal of the project is to reuse waste heat and carbon dioxide in order to create a greener alternative to burning fossil fuels. The Global Awards were presented in Birmingham, UK and celebrate excellence, innovation and achievement in the chemical, biochemical and process industries. Established in 1994, the Awards attract international attention.

Annual Bring a Doctor Home Hockey Tournament Raises $30,956 for NOSM Student Bursaries

From January 18 – 23, 2016, volunteer employees and retirees of Essar Steel Algoma Inc. came together for their annual Bring a Doctor Home Hockey Tournament at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. Since its inception in 2006, the Bring a Doctor Home Tournament has resulted in over $300,000 student bursaries that support medical students at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) who hail from the Sault. A volunteer appreciation event was held On Thursday, January 21, 2016 a cheque for $30,956 was presented by Tournament Director Chris Lepore to Dr. Janice Willett, NOSM Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Continuing Education and Professional Development on behalf of the School. Dr. Willett is also a gynecologist from Sault Ste. Marie.
