Reporting

The Rural Stream West Assistant Site Director, Family Medicine, reports to the Program Director, Family Medicine, and functionally to the Rural Stream Site Director.

Responsibilities

Summary of Functions

Under the guidance of the Rural Stream West Site Director and in collaboration with the Rural Stream Faculty and/or Competency Coaches, provides direction for all aspects of education for the Rural Stream residents including:

  • Planning, development and promotion of rural residency education including competencies, objectives, outcomes, curriculum and assessment consistent with the accreditation standards of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and with the mission and values of NOSM University (NOSM U)
  • In collaboration with the Stream Director, Program Director and the Assessment Director, providing support for residents experiencing difficulties, including attendance at special meetings, identifying faculty members for enhanced learning plan and remediation, and any other task associated with the successful progression of the resident
  • Working in collaboration with the site area coordinators (SACs) or other administrative personnel, ensures a practical orientation and a welcoming positive environment for learners e.g. organize regular social events, maintain an open-door policy for residents.
  • Ensuring that learners are well prepared for practice in northern, rural and remote communities
  • Participating in overall program assessment and evaluation such as annual quality improvement (e.g. feedback to Program Director, recommendations for improvements to the rural stream etc.)
  • Contributing to the recruitment and development of clinical sites across the rural stream

Specific Responsibilities

Collaborates with the Rural Stream West Site Director and the other Site Directors and Assistant Site Directors in the following tasks and responsibilities:

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Selection of residents to the stream/program
  • May act as a dossier reviewer and/or attend residency interview days
  • May be requested to represent and/or attend as the stream delegate to:
    • Residency Program Committee (RPC)
    • Annual face-to-face RPC retreat
    • Resident Assessment Committee
    • Academics Curriculum Committee
    • Any other program and/or University committees as required
  • Maintains regular contact with designated residents by phone or email to discuss strategies to improve learning, teaching and the learning environment in the rural communities.
  • May be requested to visit rural teaching sites at the request of the Program Director and/or Rural Stream Site Director

Academic Responsibilities:

Assists with the following:

  • Overseeing the clinical experiences of stream residents to ensure all objectives and competencies can be achieved
  • Scheduling of resident rotations, in collaboration with the SAC, LEG administrators, and the Program Coordinator
  • Ensuring appropriate assessment of residents in line with the program requirements including face-to-face feedback, direct observation of clinical skills, timely completion of In-Training assessment Reports (ITARs) by faculty and the Periodic Review process
  • Ensuring that each stream resident has an identified Competency Coach and participates in the stream’s competency committee meetings quarterly
  • Identifying and securing resources required for the delivery of the curriculum
  • Maintaining regular communication with clinical teachers and Competency Coaches
  • Ensuring the provision of safe learning/teaching, research and clinical environments for learners, staff and faculty

Qualifications

Éducation

  • Doctor of Medicine degree
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Practicing in one of the communities included in the rural stream (but different than the community in which the Stream Director practices)
  • Holds (or is eligible for) a faculty appointment with NOSM U
  • Certification in Family Medicine (CCFP)
  • Several years of involvement in postgraduate medical education is an asset
  • Experience in the administration of postgraduate residency programs is an asset

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • One and one-half (1.5) days per month
