We are seeking a Research Assistant Intern to support the evolution of the NORTHH (NOSM University Research Toward Health Hub) practice-based research and learning network into a more encompassing Northern and rural primary care learning health system.

The intern will actively contribute to existing projects, including the evaluation of AI scribes in primary care and medical education, and new initiatives focused on mapping existing primary care learning health system research projects and participating in new primary care research learning health system initiatives. Some of the initiatives may include studying interprofessional team models in low-resource settings, and primary care attachment and access patterns across Northern Ontario, with a focus on measuring and reporting access to primary care in rural and northern communities. Knowledge mobilization will be a key element of the work. Work may additionally include creating and improving systems and structures that support patient-oriented research.

This position offers exposure to health services research methods, real-world primary care challenges, and opportunities to contribute to knowledge that informs policy and practice in Northern Ontario at a time when the province has prioritized primary care.

This internship will help foster long-term regional development, ensuring that Northern Ontario becomes a hub for primary care excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities

Tasks may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducting literature reviews;
  • Mapping existing research projects;
  • Collecting and analyzing data;
  • Preparing reports and presentations;
  • Engaging with community, patient, academic, and health system partners;
  • Knowledge mobilization;
  • Weekly meeting and monthly progress reports.

Specific duties:

  • Participating in active research projects led and supported by the current NORTHH research team related to AI Scribes in primary and medical education;
  • Supporting the review of policy documents and literature on interprofessional teams, and primary care access and attachment in Northern Ontario;
  • Collaborating with partner organizations, including Ontario Health Teams and NOAMA, to do an environmental scan and mapping of existing Northern Ontario primary care learning health system research activities;
  • Working with Arcand Centre staff to develop guidelines for patient-partnered research in the North
  • Contributing to the preparation of research reports, manuscripts, policy briefs and presentations;
  • Supporting knowledge mobilization activities (i.e., website, social media, etc.);
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Éducation

  • A University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Candidate Criteria

  • Candidates must be graduates of post-secondary degree or diploma programs.
  • Candidates must be a new entrant into the workforce, transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
  • Candidates must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship.
  • Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must reside or be willing to relocate to Northern Ontario
  • University or college graduate who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be a first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Related experience is considered an asset, but not a requirement
  • Demonstrated writing proficiency (i.e. reports, research publications, policies);
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Work effectively under time pressures;
  • Work effectively in a team environment;
  • Work within established organizational practices, protocols, and policies;

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
