Reporting

The Phase 3 Co-Director, Sault Ste. Marie, reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), and interacts with the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, who provides collegial and collaborative supervision, leadership and guidance including delegation of tasks and contribution to performance review in the clinical aspects of the curriculum.

Responsibilities

The Phase 3 Co-Director, Sault Ste. Marie, will work with the Phase 3 Co-Directors, both East and West Campuses, and assist the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of Phase 3 (Year 4) Clerkship with particular focus on Phase 3 activities.

For the period of 2026-2027, this role will focus on strategic planning for medical education expansion in preparation for the Phase 3 (UGY4) program launch in Sault Ste. Marie.

Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  • Lead strategic planning sessions for medical education expansion to build UGY4 capacity for 2027 student intake and establish overall site medical learner capacity
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the NOSM U UME Phase 3 curriculum
  • Develop knowledge around the CACMS accreditation standards pertinent to Phase 3, incorporate standards into program planning, and participate in accreditation related activities as required
  • Establish a plan to support local Phase 3 departments curriculum based on current infrastructure and faculty
  • Identify infrastructure, equipment, IT, administration requirements, etc. through department needs assessment in preparation to support the NOSM U UGY4 site development
  • Participate in the development of guidelines for layered learning opportunities and scheduling enhancements
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from NOSM U UME, Sault Ste. Marie Academic Medical Association (SSM AMA), Sault Area Hospital (SAH), Group Health Centre (GHC), and other local community facilities to assist in the planning process
  • Identify needs for continuing education and professional development of faculty to support Phase 3 in collaboration with SSM AMA, the Associate Dean, UME, and NOSM U CEPD
  • Interact regularly with the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, to assure that the Year 4 experience in Sault Ste. Marie fosters the development of knowledge, skills and professional attitudes appropriate to the practice of medicine
  • Establish and maintain positive, strong and well-functioning links with other NOSM units and the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education in matters relating to the Year 4 curriculum
  • Establish and maintain positive, strong and well-functioning links with Clerkship Leads, preceptors and Medical Education Department staff at Sault Area Hospital (SAH)
  • Work with other NOSM faculty members and staff to promote a learning environment that is free from mistreatment and harassment
  • Liaise with Clerkship Leads and UME leaders to ensure that students and Phase 3 faculty members are familiar with UME policies and procedures that govern medical education including the Duty Hours and On-Call Policy, Interruptions to Student Attendance and leaves of Absence Policy, Clinical Accommodations Procedure, Mistreatment Procedure, and other Phase 3 policies
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education to develop, recruit faculty and oversee Phase 3 Orientation, Academic Week and Boot Camp activities in Sault Ste. Marie
  • Discuss, develop, and approve clinical and non-clinical electives for Phase 3 students
  • Welcome and orient faculty members to Phase 3 site
  • Develop, in collaboration with department leads, rotation schedule for core rotations in Sault Ste. Marie and manage adjustments and changes to rotation schedule as required
  • Attend UME meetings and meetings with Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, Phase 3 Co- Director – East and West Campuses, and NOSM UME staff as requested
  • Regularly attend Phase 3 Committee meetings and provide updates related to Sault Ste. Marie site
  • Serve as Chair or Vice-Chair of the Phase 3 Committee (if required)
  • Attend committee meetings and/or serve as alternate for Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, as required on Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), Student Assessment and Promotion Committee (SAPC), Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) or other committees as required

Qualifications

Éducation

  • M.D. or equivalent with appropriate post-graduate training for clinical practice
  • RCPSC or CCFP certification
  • Current licensure with CPSO

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have a Faculty Appointment or qualify for Faculty Appointment in Clinical Sciences Division, ideally at the rank of Assistant Professor or above
  • Must have an active practice in Sault Ste. Marie with privileges at Sault Area Hospital (SAH)
  • Experience in a related field
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a leadership position is required
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a leadership role within a committee is required
  • Experience in developing, managing and implementing medical school curriculum in an accredited medical school is an asset
  • Evidence of strong leadership and decision-making skills is required
  • Evidence of superior communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills is required
  • Evidence of ability to be an effective team player and team leader is required
  • Knowledge of progressive approaches to leading change, problem solving, and conflict resolution is required

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • One and one-half (1.5) days per week
