Reporting

The Site Director, Family Medicine Remote First Nations Stream, reports academically to the Program Director, Family Medicine, for the medical education activities and to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, for financial matters and non-academic policy and strategy. The Program Director and/or Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, will provide direction.

Foundational Principles

  • Collaboration with First Nations Peoples and communities will be based on relationship and include trust and respect.
  • NOSM University (NOSM U) recognizes and respects the immemorial, constitutional, Treaty and international rights of Matawa and other Indigenous Peoples.
  • The residency candidate selection process for the Remote First Nations Stream (RFNS) is a joint partnership between First Nations communities and NOSM U.
  • The RFNS is grounded in both hands-on learning in First Nations communities and strong core Family Medicine training where clinical volumes are sufficient to provide excellent clinical skills and will include the following:
    • Longitudinal learning in the community to create and nurture trusting relationships between community members and residents
    • Rotations in NWO rural communities, e.g. Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Kenora
    • Working towards an understanding of traditional healing and medicine therapies recognizing that Elders’ knowledge and teachings are sacred, traditional and confidential. Elders’ knowledge and teachings are not to be appropriated, disseminated or used in any way except as the Elders direct or approve
    • Residents living and providing service in remote First Nation communities while being supported, supervised and connected to NOSM U’s clinical faculty
    • Training in cultural competency, mental health and addictions and working in interdisciplinary teams

Responsabilités

Summary of Functions

Under the direction of the Family Medicine Program Director or delegate, the role of the RFNS Site Director includes the following responsibilities:

  • Working in collaboration with the Postgraduate Indigenous Health Leads and the Curriculum Instructional Designer for the RFNS to provide direction for all aspects of education for the RFNS residents including:
    • Planning, development and promotion of RFNS residency education including competencies, objectives, outcomes, curriculum, and assessment consistent with the Foundational Principles above, the accreditation standards of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and with the mission and values of the NOSM U
  • Working in collaboration with the RFNS Community Residency Liaison Coordinator(s) and other administrative personnel to ensure practical orientation, a welcoming positive environment for residents and support for their integration into the First Nations community or communities
  • Supporting respectful communication and collaboration with community members by all health care providers
  • Participating in overall program assessment and evaluation such as annual quality improvement (e.g., feedback to Program Director, Assistant Program Director, recommendations for improvements to the RPC functioning etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, other Family Medicine leaders and the Postgraduate Office, working towards accreditation for the program including engaging in continuous quality improvement, as well as preparing for and participating in internal and external reviews related to accreditation of the program
  • Contributing to the recruitment and development of clinical academic sites across Northern Ontario

Key Responsibilities

Assists with and may have specific delegated authority for the following:

Administration

  • Participates in selection of residents to the program stream including all aspects of the selection process, from promotion to selection, including dossier review, interviews and other activities of selection and promotion
  • Attends the following meetings:
    • Residency Program Committee (RPC)
    • Site Director Committee (SDC)
    • Annual face-to-face RPC retreat
    • Resident Assessment and Progression Committee
    • Other program committees as invited
  • Chairs the Residency Program Committee for the RFNS
  • Maintains regular contact with all residents by phone or email to discuss strategies to improve learning, teaching and the learning environment in the RFNS communities.

Education

  • Oversees the clinical and formal academic experiences of RFNS residents to ensure all objectives and competencies can be achieved.
  • Ensures appropriate assessment of residents in line with the program requirements including face-to-face feedback, direct observation of clinical skills, timely completion of In-Training Assessment Reports (ITARs) and Periodic Reviews (PRs) by faculty.
  • Ensures that each resident has an identified Competency Coach.
  • Assists in identifying and securing resources required for the delivery of the curriculum.
  • Maintains regular communication with clinical teachers and Competency Coaches.
  • Assists with ensuring the provision of safe learning/teaching, research and clinical environments for learners, staff and faculty.
  • Participates in the development of plans and establishing resources for residents requiring additional support, such as Enhanced Learning Plans (ELPs), Remediation Plans and/or other enriched learning experiences.

Qualifications

Éducation

  • Doctor of Medicine degree
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
  • Certification in Family Medicine (CCFP)
  • An academic appointment with NOSM U

Connaissances, Compétences et Capacités

  • Several years of proven involvement in postgraduate education
  • Experience in the administration of postgraduate residency programs an asset
  • Experience working in First Nations communities
  • Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing in Northern Ontario

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Three-quarters (0.75) of a day per week for the position
  • One-quarter (0.25) of a day per week for developmental work
