The Medical Learner Faculty Advisor plays an important role in NOSM University’s (NOSM U’s) confidential career advising system that integrates the efforts of faculty members, directors of required clinical learning experiences, the medical education offices, and Learner Support Services. Faculty in this position in collaboration with the Learner Affairs Officers (LAOs) will assist our UME medical students and PGME residents in exploring career options and determining appropriate approaches to the next steps in their medical careers.

Reporting

The Medical Learner Faculty Advisor reports to the Assistant Deans, Learner and Resident Affairs. A collaborative administrative reporting relationship will be fostered with the Director of Learner Support Services.

Responsabilités

  • In collaboration with the LAOs in Learner Support Services, provide advice and assistance to undergraduate medical students and PGME residents on choosing elective courses, evaluating career options, and applying to residency programs.
  • Meet with learners as needed when requested through the LAO’s.
  • Document discussions with learners confidentially using the information management system.
  • Maintain confidentiality unless personal safety and/or the safety of others are a concern.
  • Recommend follow-up or referrals and accept follow-up or referrals as required through Learner Support Services.
  • Establish weekly office hours for learners to self-schedule and attend monthly or bimonthly meetings with LAOs.
  • Attend Theme 6 – Medical Career committee meetings.
  • Facilitate learners’ personal and professional development in collaboration with LAOs through:
    1. Helping learners face and overcome obstacles around electives and career choices
    2. Identifying and practicing ways to thrive and build resilience as a future physician
    3. Assisting learners in navigating their professional identity formation
  • Develop expertise and skills around electives and career advising by seeking continuing education opportunities, networking with colleagues and sharing new knowledge in scholarly activities.
  • Work as a resource to the LAOs and the Assistant Deans of Learner Affairs and Resident Affairs, to support learners and faculty across UME and PGME and find synergies and opportunities to enhance career advising services at NOSM U.
  • Support Residents in exploring and planning their career paths by connecting them with relevant mentors and professionals, providing guidance on diverse opportunities both within and beyond clinical medicine, and offering career resources tailored to their interests, skills, and values.

Qualifications

Éducation

  • Doctor of Medicine Degree with a license to practice in Ontario

Certifications/Designations

  • RCPSC or CCFP certification
  • Current licensure in good standing or eligible for same with CPSO
  • Must have a Faculty Appointment or qualify for Faculty Appointment in the Clinical Sciences Division at NOSM U

Connaissances, Compétences et Capacités

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in career advising to assist medical students in choosing elective courses, evaluating career options and applying to residency programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the residency matching process

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Two (2.0) days per month
