The NOSM University Medical Oncology Training Program is Canada’s newest program in Medical Oncology. With 12 satellite chemotherapy sites and a sister site in Sault Ste. Marie, the program offers broad clinical exposure, managing 3,250 new cancer cases annually. Residents benefit from personalized mentorship by enthusiastic, early/mid-career oncologists and access to McMaster University’s structured academic curriculum, including core half-day teaching, clinical research training, and Molecular Oncology Rounds. With a resident-centered philosophy, abundant research opportunities, and a competency-based, flexible curriculum, NOSM empowers trainees to shape the program while gaining rich clinical experience.
Key Program Highlights:
- Unique Academic Collaboration: Formal partnership with McMaster University provides residents access to academic half days, research training, and Molecular Oncology Rounds.
- Resident-Centered Training: Education is prioritized over service, with regular meetings and a yearly retreat to incorporate resident feedback into program development. Ample opportunity for one-on-one learning with preceptors.
- Elective options: Residents have three elective blocks and one research block to allow focused clinical exposure or travel to potential fellowship sites.
- Diverse Clinical Exposure in a community setting: High-volume cancer center in Sudbury, plus targeted rotations in underrepresented disease sites like CNS, Sarcoma, and Clinical Genetics at McMaster.
- Longitudinal Mentorship Model: Residents follow their own patients in a supervised continuity clinic, fostering autonomy and deep clinical relationships.
- State-of-the-Art Facilities & Research Support: Access to the Labelle Innovation and Learning Centre for simulation-based training, along with a robust research environment. Residents receive dedicated protected time—one half-day weekly plus a full research block—to focus on scholarly work.
