The Site Director, Thunder Bay Family Medicine PGY3 Enhanced Skills – Emergency Medicine, reports to the Program Director, Family Medicine PGY3 Enhanced Skills – Emergency Medicine.
Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
The role of the Site Director, Thunder Bay Family Medicine PGY3 Enhanced Skills – Emergency Medicine, is to assist the Program Director in achieving the following elements:
- Providing direction for all aspects of residency training including the selection, monitoring and assessment of its learners, the planning, development and promotion of residency training at the applicable site and the maintenance and evaluation of relevant educational objectives of residency training consistent with the requirements and regulations of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and with the mission and values of the NOSM University (NOSM U) within their community context
- Working in collaboration with the local leadership, faculty and administrative personnel to ensure a welcoming and positive environment for learners (e.g., organize regular social events, maintain an open-door policy for residents)
- Structuring regular meetings with all residents at the site as a group and individually as required to address residents’ concerns and discuss strategies to improve teaching and the learning environment at the site
- Ensuring that learners are well prepared for practice in northern, rural, and remote communities
- Ensuring effective coordination and collaboration of residency training at their site and with other residency programs, the undergraduate program, electives programs and allied health professionals
- Participating in overall program assessment, evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives
- Preparing for, contributing and participating in internal and external reviews and accreditation
Educational Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Program Director and community representatives to ensure appropriate use of community resources such that learners are integrated in a suitable manner
- Assists with ongoing review and development and planning of the residency program including educational objectives, academic curriculum, and clinical curriculum consistent with the requirements of the CFPC and NOSM U
- Assists in identifying and securing resources required for the delivery of the curriculum
- Maintains regular communication with clinical and academic teachers at the site to provide support, address concerns, and identify needs for faculty development
- Liaises with Local LEG members in their role pertaining to the residency program
- Attends, and organizes learners and faculty supervisors for, Pan-Northern Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds
- Coordinates Residents as Teachers (RaTS) sessions
- Liaises with learners from NOSM U and other medical schools completing undergraduate and postgraduate electives and core rotations within the community
- Meets with residents to provide career counselling
- Facilitates the assignment of a Faculty Advisor, a Faculty Mentor, and a Scholarly Project Supervisor to each program resident at the site
- Assists with ensuring the provision of safe learning/teaching, scholarly activity, research, and clinical environments for learners, staff, and faculty at the site including ensuring timely completion of evaluations
- Assists with and contributes to learning plans and remediation of learners in conjunction with the Faculty Advisor
Administrative Responsibilities
- With the assistance of the Program Director, and other program leadership, works towards attaining full accreditation for the program
- Attends all Residency Program Committee and meetings
- Attends the Site Medical Education Committee meetings (if applicable)
- Assists with resident selection related processes such as file review and program interviews
- Assists with timely review and management of in-training assessments of learners, preceptors, and rotations
- Reviews learner feedback of academics and rotations
- Books local faculty for academic sessions
- Participates as a member of the RPC subcommittees including the Competence Committee and Recruitment and Selection Subcommittee
- Participates in retreats and other faculty and program development activities
- Attends Orientation and Unified Rounds at the Thunder Bay site
- Attends and organizes Pan Northern Emergency Grand Rounds
- Attends program related meetings
- Liaises with rotation leads at Thunder Bay site to ensure high quality learning environments and evaluations
- Liaises with Medical Director/Chief of Department and Patient Relations at TBRHSC regarding feedback on residents or the program from patients and families
Qualifications
Éducation
- Doctor of Medicine degree
- Current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
- CCFP (EM) certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Faculty appointment with NOSM U
- Hospital privileges at Thunder Bay Regional Health Centre (TBRHC) and performs clinical duties in the department(s) respective to emergency medicine at the site
- Member of the Thunder Bay Emergency Associates LEG
- Several years of involvement in postgraduate education
- Experience in the administration of postgraduate residency programs is an asset
- Self-motivated and directed
- Superior interpersonal, communication, management, and problem-solving skills
- Resident advocacy skills and interest
Langue
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- One (1.0) day per week
